Cannot mount pgp virtual disk while stored on external hdd

Created: 04 Jul 2011 • Updated: 04 Jul 2011 | 3 comments

Dear all,

I cannot mount any pgp virtual disk while it is saved on my external hdd. (windows 7 64bit, pgp desktop 10.1.0, western digital mybook 3tb, ntfs). I can mount and unmount the same file while it is stored on another drive. However, when trying to mount it while stored on my external hdd, I am asked for my passphrase. Everything seems fine HOWEVER, it only shows as "local disk" and does not contain any files. when clicking on it, windows asks if the file should be formatted. Copying the very SAME pgp-disk to another drive allows me to access my files without any problems. I have run diagonstics on the external hdd, it seems to have NO problem.

The problem occurs with ANY pgp virtual disk, regardless of file name, size, etc.

Looking forward to hearing your advice!

Thank you very much! :-)

All the best! Moritz

You may want to check the specs for the external disk.  If it has the newer 4096 byte sector size instead of the expected 512 byte sector size, this may be the problem.  PGP does not yet support the larger sector size.

Thank you for your info. Indeeed, it would have never occured to me that this might be a possible reason. Do you expect a pgp update that allows larger cluster sizes to come soon?  -- I cannot format this specific disk with a small cluster size in ntfs. I believe that this is due to the large capacity of the disk. Would my virtual disks run on a exFAS formatted (512 byte) drive?

I don't know if this is the actual cause of your difficulty, but think it may be.  If it is, I suspect that the service pack mentioned in this Knowledge Base Article may take care of the problem.
