We just install Client Management Suite 7.5. The intent was to have the Notification server, and a separate Task/Package server.

I either missed the option or it was not presented during installation, but the NS server is also the Task Server.

I would like to get the Task service off of the NS server, and running on the separate Package Server, but when I go to configure the Task Server, the option to add Task service is greyed out, not available.

I really would like to have the NS server (with off-box SQL connection) Not running task service, but has task and package services running on a separate server. Thank You in advance.

Please do not remove the TS from the SMP as it is supposed to be there.

The reason why you can't install the TS on the PS is most likely that is doesn't have .Net 3.5 installed.

When we had an Symantec Architect here for recommendations pre-installation, he recommended having Task Server separate. Here is a clip from his recommended architecture:

SK is right.  You HAVE to have Task Services installed on the SMP, even if it's not functioning as a task server.

Yes, we recommend having remote task servers in order to remove the load from the SMP; however, you still need to have the task service installed on the SMP in order for the majority of functionality to work.

I appreciate your comments. Before I close the thread, can you tell me what issues I may have if the task service is not installed on the SMP? Also, the SMP and site/package server are in the same location, if the task service will be on both, do I have to take steps to direct the clients/agents to "take orders" from the package/site server rather than the SMP? I am trying to transfer much of the workload from the SMP.

ITMS 7.x relies heavily on the task service for most of its operations.  If you remove the task service from the SMP, most if not all of ITMS will stop functioning.

Configuring the Site Server Settings will allow the clients to download packages from the PS as well as talk to the TS or TS's that you wish.

Please refer to the SMP documentation for full details on how to cofigure those settings to suit your environment.

In 7.1 if you try and remove Task Services from the NS it breaks Task Services.

Again in 7.1 I create a Reset Task Agent task and run it weekly on all PCs in the built in Filter for Managed Task Agents of the NS (Computer Filters > Task Service Filters).

You can set up Sites to avoid the NS getting too many Task Agents connecting to it, see "Best Practice: Managing Task Server Communications in 7.0 and 7.1" although the options for managing Task Server communications may be improved in 7.5:

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO48411

Did you get your Site Server to appear as a potential Task Server? As well as .NET missing you need IIS too and for Basic Inventory to have reported the presence of both and filters to have updated.

Yes, I was able to add task service to the second server after SK's first comment - added IIS, .NET. I will look into directtask servers to specifc task servers, as we will be adding more to separate workloads and traffic from corporate offices and remote locations.
