Cannot restore GRT backup of Exchange 2003

Having trouble restoring mail items from a GRT enabled Exchange 2003 backup. The backup works without a problem, but when we go to restore some e-mails that a user has deleted from their mailbox, it starts the restore okay, restoring the entire storage group to the staging area (which takes about 2 hours). But as soon as it finishes that bit, just before it should start to restore the actual items, it quits with the following errors:

Restore- \\exchangeserver\Microsoft Information Store\Second Storage Group
V-79-57344-766 - Cannot log on to MAPI with the specified credentials. Review the resource credentials for the job, and then run the job again.

V-79-57344-760 - Unable to open the item username [username] - skipped.

When you search for these errors, all the results are for things where the backup is failing, but for us the backup works every night, it's just the restore that fails. We've been through all the steps in http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/311718.htm but everything it suggests we are either already doing (the account we use to backup and restore is an Exchange Full Admin and a Domain Admin, it's not hidden, it is unique etc.) or only refers to Exchange 2007 which we are not using.

Is there anything that anyone else can suggest we try?

Hello, Create a new account

Hello,

Create a new account in AD named : symantec with following settings:
1  : Member of the Domain Admin group and Local Admin Group if Exchange is a member server
2  : Create a Mailbox for Symantec, send a test email and oprn it in OWA to activate the Mailbox.
3  : Make sure that the Mailbox is not hidden from the Global Address List.
4  : Add the account "symantec" as Exchange Server Administrator in Exchange Management Console.

Open Backup Exec, go to TOOLS--Logon Accounts and Change the Logon Account to "symantec", make sure that "system Logon Account" and "Default Logon Account" is symantec.

Now restore any individual item from exchange backups.

Hope this helps...

Its a best practice to have a "Support Contract" with Symantec...

Hi, It sometimes doesn't work

Hi,

It sometimes doesn't work when doing GRT restores from tape.
Have you considered staging to disk first before restoring from your media on disk?
If not, run through the article below and try it. Please post the results...

Laters!

If you find this is a solution, please mark it as such.

Did a duplicate backup job

Did a duplicate backup job last night (had to run it overnight) and while this seemed to work, when I tried to restore from it this morning, I got the same error, but this time in a dialog box (so at least I didn't have to wait two hours for it to stage!)

This appeared when I clicked on the [+] next to the relevant Mailbox Store in the Restore pane (under the media entry IMG000001).

I haven't tried creating a new account yet as per the first post, but this is my next move.
