Cannot restore/extract from backup

Created: 14 May 2013 | 4 comments

I downloaded Backup Exec 2012 to try and get some information off of some old tapes we have. I am not familiar at all with tapes or the software itself, so bear with me please. I got everything hooked up, and I can see all the tapes themselves in Backup Exec. Apparently it read something from the tapes, the name of the server I am trying to access information off of, and it let me go through and select the files I need off the server for restoring. I go through the whole restore prompt, and once the process actually starts, I get the error that it needs me to import the 0000003L tape (or similar) - which is located in the stack with the rest. The issue is there is nowhere to actually import the tape (the options are grayed out) and the tape shows that it has 373/373 (or similar) of GB free. Considering both images I am trying to retrieve are 5gb+ each, they are assumingly not on it. If I press OK on the message, it just comes back and the job stays queued.

Any suggestions?

Make sure that the tape that BE is requesting has been inventoried & catalogged.

If you are using a tape library, make sure that the requested tape is in the library when the restore starts.

Thank you for the quick responses. I went through and catalogged the system and inventoried it I believe. The tape, 000003L3 also shows 373/373gb of storage left, so there doesn't appear to be anything on it. In the job, I get "Please insert media 000003L3 into the robotic library by creating an Import media job." however the tape is already in that library and the machine appears to actually see it...it just registers the tape as blank.

In "ALL MEDIA" it also shows two 000003L3 tapes...however I only have one. The rest are all different.

EDIT: Okay, sorry to be confusing. The 000003L3 now shows twice. HOWEVER, the first one shows in Robotic Library 0001 and shows it has data on it (GOOD!), however there is another with 373 of 373 free that shows it isn't in any location...it is just sitting there. I think it is trying to get me to import that tape, but it is not there. How do I get rid of this so I can read data off of the real 3L3 tape?

EDIT2: Apparently I did something right, re- catalogging and inventorying them seemed to work, it is now restoring, even though the missing 3L3 still shows. Thanks for the help again.

If you ever some how see/get duplicates, I would move both of them to the retired media set, delete them, then run an inventory & catalog to get the proper goodness back into the BE database.

Since you are already restoring, you apparently have the good one in the database, so i would just retire and delete the assumed bad one.
