Good Morning. I am having problem sending mails outside our company and it looks like i am having a misconfiguration but do not know where to look at. I am using Brightmail Gateway v8.0.3 as a control center and scanner, scanner for both inbound and outbound and vmware esxi 3.5 The bounced message is like this: Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. Subject: Test email Sent: 1/6/2010 08:04 The following recipient(s) could not be reached: 'test@yahoo.com' on 1/6/2010 08:04 554 Recipient address rejected: User unknown Please give me the light where to look at the configurations. Thank you in advance

I dunno if you tried another emaill addres, but I hope so becuase thats not a valid user.

The best test for this is to access the console through your VMWare Infrastructure Client and log in as admin. Then telnet to the MX record of a mail server, as an example, try Yahoo's MX record: a.mx.mail.yahoo.com

This is what the command will look like:

    telnet a.mx.mail.yahoo.com 25

You shoud then get an answer like this:

220 mta111.mail.ac4.yahoo.com ESMTP YSmtp service ready

If not, it will fail somehow and give you an error, maybe a DNS error or something that you can troubleshoot. You should try a traceroute and see where it fails. If it fails at your firewall, you know you need to check your settings on the firewall.

If you get the answer, start by issuing the 'helo' command plus your domain, like this:

    helo symantec.com

Then tell the server who the message is from:

    mail from: test@symantec.com

Then who the message is for:

    rcpt to: davis_je@yahoo.com

Then if everything gives you a 250 or 300 level reply, go ahead with this:

    data

    Subject: test

    testing, 1, 2, 3...

Then end with a period and carriage return:

    .

I think you are testing mail to outside world by sending mail to the "inbound" interface of your Symantec Brightmail Gateway (SBG); that's what the error "554 Recipient address rejected: User unknown", if coming from your SBG, indicates.

To test mail to the outside world, you need to connect to the "outbound" interface of SBG.  Also note that only IP addresses that have been configured as allowed host will be able to connect.  So if you are connecting to SBG outbound interface from an IP address that is not in the allowed list you will get a "554...Client host rejected: Access denied" error message.

To allow an IP address to connect to the outbound interface of SBG, please see the section titled "Changing Scanner outbound mail acceptance settings" in Symantec Brightmail Gateway 8.0 Administration Guide available here:

    ftp://ftp.entsupport.symantec.com/pub/support/documentation/sbg_administration_guide.pdf

JDavis has kindly provided steps to send test mail using telnet.  You may also find the following KB article for mail testing useful:
