Cannot uninstall SEPv12

Created: 31 Oct 2013 • Updated: 04 Nov 2013 | 10 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

I upgraded from SEP v11 to SEPv12.  After the upgrade the Symantec client is showing "No Symantec protection technologies installed."  I tried re-installation to both modify and repair the existing installation to no avail.

I read other forums that gave me a couple group policy settings to check.  They don't apply in my situation.  I intended on un-installing and re-installing, but I get error messages stating that SEP "could not be completely installed" when trying to un-install and it rolls back the un-installation.  Does anyone have any suggestions prior to performing a manual removal or using CleanWipe?

The system is running Server 2003 SP2 32-bit.

Hello,

In your case, I would suggest you to Perform either a Manual Uninstallation

Manual uninstall documents for Symantec Endpoint Protection

OR

Run the Latest version of Cleanwipe (Available with Symantec Technical Support).

However, Did you check these articles:

You may need to contact Symantec Technical Support and create a case for Latest CleanWipe Tool.

Thanks.  Yes, I had been to each of these links prior to writing this post.  The re-installation I attempted included the option to remove previous logs and policies.  I will definitely contact Symantec for their version of CleanWipe.  By the way, I am running SEP 12.1.3001.165 on both the client and the manager.  One of the links above says that this issue was corrected in 12.1 RU1.  What version is RU1?

I am planning to perform the CleanWipe tomorrow, 11-1-2013 (or a manual install if I don't get the utility in time), so I'll leave this post open until that time, so I can give you feedback on the outcome.

Run the cleanwipe tool to resolve the issue. Before running the tool get the downtime for the Server because it require to restart while performing activity.

I am assuming you mean to reinstall and choose the repair option.  Yes, that has been attempted already; the install failed and rolled back the changes.

Run the cleanwipe, if already runned share the log of sep_inst.log from %temp%

Thanks for all the comments.  I ran CleanWipe Friday and was able to perform a new installation afterwards.  This time the client installed correctly.
