We are deploying SEE 7.0.3 as a replacement from Encryption Plus Hard Disk from Guardian Edge and have run into an issue with Kingston Data Traveler Encrypted USB drives. In our network we only allow these encrypted drives.

“DTSecure Privacy requires two free drive letters” is the generic error and it shuts down.

We ran EPHD from Guardian at version 7.1.2 with the same problem. They upgraded their software to 7.2.1 and it fixed it. All was well until now with our deploying of SEE 7.0.3 we have the issue again. On XP it allows us to use the drives however Windows 7 produces the error about not enough free drives.

Guardian has a fix in the new version which works in XP, VISTA and 7. What about SEE?

If you continue to have DTSP startup issues, you may need to disable or upgrade any third party hard disk encryption software. There are known compatibility issues with GuardianEdge Encryption Plus Hard Disk (EPHD) software and Kingston's secure USB drives. Please contact Guardian Edge for additional information.

I would try migrating to version 7.0.4 of SEE. This version still does not support Windows 7 officially, however, there were many compatibility enhancements with this build.

We just tested 7.0.5 and the Kingston drives now work in Windows 7.  HOWEVER, password boot authentication which worked on Windows 7 with 7.0.3 has been removed.  They indicate 7.0.6 later this year will have that feature.  So we still cannot deploy Windows 7 to our laptop users since there is no preboot login prompt now unless we stay at 7.0.3.  The SEE console after upgrade now in 7.0.5 states "This feature is unavailable because SEE accounts on this computer use automatic authentication."  So the upgrade is also a downgrade.   Oddly enough if I encrypt a Server 2008 test machine with 7.0.5 pre boot passwords work.  Supporting windows 7 should not be that difficult.  It has been out over a year.

If anyone has a workaround please post or I guess it will be another 6 months.  Thanks.

We finally have a working solution.  7.0.6 with Windows 7 and the Kingston encrypted drives seems to work fine now along with the Preboot authentication working in Windows 7.  Now we can move forward.
