  • 1.  Can't add resource (computer) to organizational group

I have 2 PCs that are replacements for older PCs. The older PCs were being managed successfully in my Symantec Management Console (ver 7.0) and I was running BESR 2010 just fine on them. I swapped out the PCs with new ones and went through the steps of re-installing Altiris Agent, BESR plug-in and BESR 2010. Everything looked good on the PC side, but the PCs would never communicate with the BESR server so none of my policies would ever update to these 2 new clients. I checked under "Computers" in BESR 2010 and they show up, but when I try to add them to a policy, they are not selectable options. So I went into the Resource Management and I see that the 2 new PCs are there, but they are not in the standard Organizational Group as all my other PCs.

When I right-mouse click on one and select "Add to organizational group", then follow the steps to put them in the same group as all my other PCs, it doesn't allow me to select "Computers" under Default\All Resources\Asset\Network Resource\Computer. So I right-mouse click on one of the PCs again and select "Move". This time when I try to move to the group I want, I get another error:

So I am stuck. The only place it lets me move the new PCs to are a new organizational group if I want to create one. But all my other 200+ PCs are in the group I'm trying to add these to. What are my options here? Why aren't these installing like all the other PCs?

Pretend Move isn't there.  You should use the Add to organizational group action.  The Move action doesn't work for computer resources and shouldn't appear in the Context menu.  Furthermore, you cannot move assets within the Default View.

As to why they aren't appearing as Computer resource types, I'm not sure.  I would try uninstalling the agent (and all the BESR items) and reinstalling just the agent.  A basic inventory and a resource membership update on the NS should be all that's needed to put these in the right organizational group in the default view.

Thank you for the reply. When I try to "add to organization group" action, it doesn't allow me to select the Default\All Resources\Asset\Network Resource\Computer group. I click on it and nothing gets highlighted/selected and I'm pretty much stuck there. I've also tried uninstalling everything (agent + all BESR items) and then installing again. Same thing happens.

I'm all out of ideas. So this raises the question, if I am going to upgrade machines that already have the agent installed, do I have to do anything special in regards to making sure my Symantec Management Console treats it the same (same policies applied as the old machine).  I am going to be doing similar upgrades in the future and don't want to run into issues. Basically I'm changing the machine, but the hostname/IP address remains the same.

As I mentioned, you cannot reassign them to a new group within the Default view.  You can only move them in custom views.

I can't even begin to guess that's causing them to not appear in the Computers group in the Default view.  I would recommend submitting a case to Symantec to report the bug.

Just tried adding another PC (not a replaced/upgraded one) that wasn't ever connected with the Altiris agent and it does the same thing. It looks like when the agent is installed, something is not configured right so that computers get added to the proper organizational group. I haven't created any of my own groups, so it's just the default one.

edit- just submitted a trouble ticket with Symantec. My past experiences with them have not been good so crossing fingers here....

Well while waiting for tech support to call me back, I rebooted my VM that was running my notification server. During that time tech support calls, we start a remote session and of course, the problem has fixed itself after a reboot. Never fails....LOL.  Don't know why it started doing that, just glad it's working like normal again.
