i want to upgrade my sepm to sep 12.1.4. before do it, i'm trying to backup the database using Database Backup and Restore wizard as require by symantec . But i cannot. i see this error: " backup failed due to a database problem: [Sybase][JDBC Driver][SQL Anywhere] I/O error Fatal error: A disk read from file "C:\Program files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\db\sem5.db" failed with error code: (23) -- transaction rolled back "

how can i solve this problem. i need help

How much space do you have on C:?

Do you have enough space on C drive? whats the size of SEM5.db?

and also try restarting embedded db service once and then try the backup

i'm repairing  the SEPM but i have the same error when i try to backup the database using Database Backup and Restore wizard . when this error appear, it stop the symantec embedded database service. i'm restarting manually this service and running the Database Validation tool. the database is valid. so i don't know why i have again this error. please help me.

Can i copy manually the database and paste it on another disk for backup before upgrading the SEPM ? i'm never doing the backup of this database, it's my first time. or can i upgrade the SEPM without backup the database?

You mean SEPM repair is successful but not able to take database backup. Correct me if I am wrong.

It's strongly recommended to take a database backup prior to SEPM upgrade.

Total how many clients are managed by SEPM? If there are limited number of clients and don't have specific policies then can think to upgrade without backup. Can export policies manually and import after upgrade if those are custom.

Go to the SEPM Install Dir\Tools run DBVALIDATOR.BAT - it will run and then place a log file in the SEPM Install dir\Tomcat\logs\dbvalidator-0.log

Paste the contents there - also - how many clients are reporting to the SEPM? Do you have any advanced configurations going on? Maybe exporting your policies and saving your S/N and the recovery file - remove the SEPM and reinstall using the upgrade SEPM install file and just recreate a new DB with the existing recovery file may be the solution (Disaster Recovery w/o database) just re-import your policies and recreate your client groups and go from there.

A remove/reinstall w/o db is not something I would say do off the bat, but if there are only like 50 clients or less or if you are really not attached to the database or starting with a fresh baseline isn't a concern - you could save yourself quite a few hours by starting over (if you have your policies exported) - obviously if this is a bigger environment or you are hesistatn, then run the valdation tool and post the results

i'm able to login to SEPM and i'm trying to backup the DB within SEPM console but it's the same result.the backup fails and the symantec embedded database service stops. so i  restart manually the symantec embedded database service . 150 clients are managed by SEPM with specific policies.

Take the backup of policies & disaster recovery file.

Give a try to perform an ugprade

If failed I would suggest to go with a fresh install of SEP 12.1 RU4 & perform following steps:

You can perform a disaster recovery without a database backup, but the following points apply in this case:

• All policies must be re-created, or imported from other backups i.e. exported policy files.
• Clients will be able to communicate with the SEPM but will re-appear in the console only after their next check-in.
• Clients will reappear in the default group as they check in, unless you enable automatic creation of client groups on the re-installed SEPM by editing "scm.agent.groupcreation=true" to the conf.properties file. This file is located <drive>Program files or(x86)/Symantec/Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager/tomcat/etc.
• If you originally had multiple SEPM domains beyond the default domain, you must re-create them using domain IDs from Backup.txt.3

Try the following steps:

1) Navigate to the following path:

C:\Program Files (x86) or SEPM installed drive\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\tomcat\etc\conf.properties.

Open the conf.properties file with Notepad.Before making any changes take the backup of file.

Check for the line scm.agent.root= C\:\\Program Files (x86)\\Symantec\\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\\data

Change the location to  scm.agent.root= D\:\\test folder or any other custom location

Run the management server configuration wizard, make sure server data folder path is showing custom location.

Run the database backup & wizard & confirm backup has been placed on custom location or not.

I agree with Chetan's assessment here - IMO, the database is nowhere near as important as it is trumped up to be these days. Especially when you are dealing with 250 or less clients - many times you can stand up a new install of the SEPM with the latest version (provided that you have a [recovery-file].zip handy) and get an environment managable again much faster than it takes to pick apart and figure out exactly where it fell apart at.

However, with policy imports and exports - I generally do not like keeping AV and FW and the A&DC policies that were built in 11.x and migrated on up. If they were, you can import them in and reference them for information, but I tend to stay away from their defaults because of significant secuirty issues and/or functionality issues that are presented when running or that SEP 12.1.x has a much different way it works vs. 11. When you migrate from 11.x to 12.1.x, policies are migrated (to the best of ability), and anything that is new is sorta...just filled in with default. However, the GIGO pricipal applies - GIGO meaning: Garbage In, Garbage Out.

Moral of the story, if you elect to follow the disaster recovery w/o DB steps - export your policies, keep them handy (if something goes completely crazy, you can enable them) but use them as a reference if you are wanting to improve your overall security (as I would assume for the whole intention here is to upgrade, which theoretically should help improve overall security). Just food for thought.
