Can't Fix Proactive Threat Protection

This issue has been solved. See solution.

I have a situation whereby a managed SEP client is showing Proactive Threat Protection as off.  SEP is MR4 MP1a on 2000 Server, SEPM is MR3 on 2003 Standard.  The SEP GUI on the client shows "Proactive Threat Protection is disabled", and of course, I get the big Fix button.  After clicking Fix, a dialog box pops up stating that SEP has requested new definitions from the management server and that the problem will disappear when the management server responds.  I click OK to that, and wait.  Nothing happens after that.  The SEPM console shows the client responding to SEPM (in the client status view), and AV definitons appear to be updating normally.

I'm not quite sure how to go about troubleshooting this issue.  Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

On Server Operating Systems

On Server Operating Systems the Proactive Threat Protection only supports Commercial Application List scanning or "CAL". This is why the status shows as "OFF" in the client interface. This is by design.

I have another Windows 2000

I have another Windows 2000 Server right next to it whereby the GUI shows that Proactive Threat Protection is "Off" but the status shows a green check mark.  The server in question is showing a red error icon in the SEP console, and an error mark over the SEP icon in the system tray.  I believe these are different issues.

PTP and Windows 2000

Hi,

The PTP feature is not supported on Server OS, therefore even if you install it it would remain as OFF.

Thanks & Regards Sandip C Sali

Ok, but why is it showing

Ok, but why is it showing that there's an error?  I feel I'm not being heard properly.

My guess is that it was

My guess is that it was installed as enabled but can't do so based on sandip_sali's statement that it will remain OFF on installation.

PTP and Windows 2000

Hi,

I am sorry for the inconvinience caused. The reason why PTP shows an error could be possibly  because of a corrupt SEP installation. Please try creating a new MSI package instead of a single.exe package and then deploy it to the Windows 2000 machine...restart it and let us know.

Thanks & Regards Sandip C Sali

Another possible solution...

Because the Proactive Threat Protection is not supported in Server OS, just uninstall this component and you will not see this error any more.
Control Panel > add/remove application > Symantec Endpoint Protection > Change/Modify installation and then put a big Red Cross over the PTP component entry.
