This issue has been solved. See solution.

hello,

i'm having a problem in installling SEP client on my Vista laptop.

at that point, i was tried to installed it on Vista Business edition.

My problem is that the installer keep telling me that my machine needs to rebooted, then I rebooted it. But stillI received the same message.

Then i guess the problem is with Windows Installer; I upgraded it to Windows Installer 4.5.

and after reboot my machine again, still had the same problem (after reading the Manual, found that in order to make the installation proceed, the Windows INstaller version is 3.1 LOL; but somehow I can't get the Installer of Windows Installer 3.1 which delivered with the downloaded version of MR2 working)

I am installing the MR2 version.

any hint(s) for my problem??

regards,

Bram

I have encountered this exact same problem and after several hours and many reboots I finally gave up and installed AVG. I'd be very interested Bram if you or anyone else found a solution to this problem. I too was attempting to install MR2 on a laptop running Vista Business and the reboot prompt appeared to be bogus. Looked like a bug to me, but I was unable to find any workaround.

Thanks in advance.
Martha

What's the error message that you see ?

I am presuming but if it's "Symantec EndPoint Protection has detected that there are pending system changes that require a reboot."  then go for this:

Take a backup of and delete the contents under the following key:.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations

Make sure that your user account has permissions to this key.

De facto when AV does something, it starts jumping up and down, waving its arms, and shouting "Hey!  I found a virus!  Look at me!  I'm soooo goooood!"

Instructions for Vista

Sandeep,

I am a complete novice, so I dont know how to follow your instructions. Where do I go to change the key on Vista? Taking a backup means copying whatever I find there as a text file, just in case I need to go back to original state? Thank you.

Sandeep,

You are a genius. That worked perfectly, thank you very much.  I'd seen a post elsewhere where someone recommended modifying the content of that registry key, which did not work (for me at least).  If I can find the other entry I'll update it with your information. Removing the content did the trick!

Thanks very much for the quick response!

hello mjgd, Sandeep_Cheema

thanks for the trick. It works for me too ^^

My next problem is, the SEP client was installed as an unmanaged client; therefore I must execute the SylinkDrop.exe to replacing the sylink.xml file (in client) with the sylink.xml file from the management server so the client can communicating with the server.

When I did it, I got an error message "Could not stop the SMC service".

Any trick(s) on this issue ?

Or to solve my problem, can i simply copy the sylink.xml file from the others client whom already became managed client (using XP) and paste it to the new-still unmanaged client (using Vista)?

regards,
Bram

Hi Bram ,

Regarding your issue of error "Could not stop the SMC service" on Vista while running sylinkdrop.exe

- Right click on Sylinkdrop.exe

- Select Run as administrator

- Type in Credentilas if prompted for .

- It will replace the sylink.xml without any errors .

This error is mainly result of UAC feature availabl ein Windows Vista .

Let me know if need any thing else .

Could not stop the smc service when running SylinkDrop

Thanks for the reminder about running the program as an Admin.  That fixed my SylinkDrop problem running under Windows 7.

Welcome to the new world for installing or tweaking programs - "Run as Admin"......

I've had the exact same problem. Deleted the reg key - Symantec went on straight away. I hate Vista so much I can't put it into words.

Thanks Sandeep

My installation is currently

My installation is currently stuck at Gathering required information, with the Live Update window stuck at Connecing to liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com....it's mostly already installed, just not completely.  Do I have to uninstall it, then delete reg key, or can I cancel install and delete, and then reinstall over it?

having same issue

I'm having same issue installing SEP using Windows Vista home premium 32 bit OS on an Acer Aspire laptop model 4730Z.
  getting error message:
"Symantec Endpoint Protection has detected pending system changes that require a reboot.  Please reboot the system and rerun the installation."

I opened registry and went to,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\
I hight lighted Session Manager and deleted the "PendingFileRenameOperations" key on the right hand side.
(How do  correctly backup and save this value?)

I do not see this same key in,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations

The installation gets partly through the install shield wizard and then the blue status bar runs backwards and I get this message,
"The wizard was interrrupted before Symantec Endpoint Protection could be comeletetly installed. Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at another time please run setup again."

I have installed this on an XP machine without any problems.
Any ideas as to  the cause of this error?  Thanks
