Can't uninstall Symantec Antivirus 10.1.5000
Created: 12 May 2008 | Updated: 21 May 2010 | 8 comments
I recently upgraded my Dell Optiplex 745 from Windows XP Pro which has Symantec Antivirus 10.1.5000 to Windows Vista Ulitimate upgrade. I didn't uninstall 10.1.5000 which I probably should have done. I tried to install Symantec Antivirus 10.2 for Vista on but it won't install. Every time I try installing I get a message "This version of Symantec Antivirus does not support Vista platforms." Is there a way to uninstall 10.1.5000 manually. Any suggestions would be helpful.

This isnt a acceptable solution to uninstall manually.
This is really bad. After upgrading to windows server 2008, Symantec could not be installed automatically. They don't support server 2008 at all. I spent a lot of time manually uninstalling symantec's antivirus, and boy is it a very tedious exercise to say the least.
I'm switching to another anti-virus provider at this point. Too bad that my company spent a lot of money 6 months ago on the corporate license.
Include that you absolutely must uninstall Antivirus products before you migrate your OS.
In fact, the Windows 7 upgrade flat out wont let you do this while AV is installed.
In short, this is not so much an antivirus (Symantec) problem as it is a problem with upgrading OS.
Windows Server 2008 is, in fact, supported by both available versions of our AV family, Operating System upgrades, however, have never been supported. Regardless of our software being installed beforehand or not.
If you are having trouble installing to a 2008 machine, verify that you have downloaded the latest available version of Symantec AntiVirus (currently 10.2.3.3000) or Symantec Endpoint Protection ( 11.0.4202). Current release versions can be found by logging on to https://fileconnect.symantec.com , choosing desired language and inputting your serial number.
