Catalog import does not include Media identifier
Updated: 22 May 2010 | 6 comments
We imported a catalog from a previous version (7.1) of BackupExec to version 10d which has been installed on a different server.
We are currently unable to identify which tapes are required after initiating a restore (we're able to see all files which were backed up) because I've been told the catalog was imported from an alternate server. I was directed to an article which made reference to manually import and catalog each tape - http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/236258.htm
That appears to be a lot of work with over 300 tapes we've sent offsite. The media information must be kept somewhere which I would be able to import?
Is there anybody out there who would be of some assistance?

Hello Christopher,
As you are using tapes from a different version of Backup Exec you need to inventory and catalog the tapes first before you restore any data.
Refer to this document:
How and why to perform an Inventory and Catalog

I tried the re-index without any success. The same error is given when attempting a restore - "The job failed with the following error: Invalid Physical Volume Library Media Identifier."
If I were to install version 7.1 of BackupExec and than import catalogs, do you think a restore would work? Some articles lead me to believe it wouldn't because it's on a different server.
Hello,
You could run a catalog of the media after emtying your existing catalog folder.
It would also work with Backup Exec 10d but also with Backup Exec 7.1.

If you dont have the old 7.x server around then you will have to re-catalog all the tapes. If you have the old 7.x server around or have all the .u01 files from the 7.x server \catalog directory then you could copy the .u01 files into your 10.x catalog directory and cycle the services. This will read the files and disk based catalog files. In order to perform a restore you will need the media in the drive and inventoried.

I'm presented with the tedious task of having to inventory each tape as my only solution.
Thank-you all for your feedback.
