Catalog import does not include Media identifier
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 20 comments
We've imported the catalog from a previous version (7.1) of BackupExec to version 10d which has been installed on a different server.
We are unable to identify which tapes are required after initiating a restore because I've been told the catalog was imported from an alternate server. I was directed to an article which made reference to manually import and catalog each tape - http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/236258.htm
That appears to be a lot of work with over 300 tapes we've sent offsite. The media information must be kept somewhere which I would be able to import?
Is there anybody out there who would be of some assistance?

Hello,
Have you tried to an inventory operation and then catalog on the media ?
What was the result. If you have not tried, please try it and check the results.
If you have already tried then what is the exact error message that is occuring ?
Kindly update.
Regards

Ajit -
Did you bother to read the post?
He knows that he can do a manual inventory and catalog, but he has over 300 tape volumes, many stored off-site and wants to know if there is any way to import the v7 catalog files directly into v10
If he just copies the U01 files into the v10 \Catalogs folder, and follows http://support.veritas.com/docs/272886 to force a re-index, will that convert the old catalogs to v10 format?

I'm going to pursue Ken's suggestion of re-indexing the u01 catalog files by following article 272886.
Having to inventory each tape would be quite the task and 'very' time consuming.
I will update this thread after I follow through with Ken's suggestion.
Thank-you for your replies.

So I tried the re-index without any luck, same problem.
The error given after initiating the restore "the job failed with the following error: Invalid Physical Volume Library Media Identifier."
Any other suggestions?
Where exactly is the media identifiers kept? I'm still able to access the files from the previous version of Backup Exec in which I copied the catalog from.
Hello Christopher,
The 7.x version has totally different catalog Architecture and file extensions as that of 10. Version 10 does not recognise the 7.x Catalogs. Thats the reason you are having Problems.
The only solution to this is to recatalog the tapes, to get Backupexec 10 to recognise these catalogs.
Hope that helps.

Actually Amruta, version 10 does recognize the catalog because I can see all the files and folders which were backed up BUT it doesn't have the file to media assocation.
Hello,

Deepali - we have reindex'd the catalog and we're able to see the files and folders backed up BUT we're not able to identify the media required to complete the restore.
Hello,
Was the inventory operation sucessful?

Hello,
Kindly perform the following:
1. Close Backup Exec console
2. In Control Panel | Services, stop all the Backup Exec services.
3. Rename the Backup ExecCATALOGS FOLDER under Path Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\Catalog. CATALOG.OLD.
5. In Control Panel | Services, start all the Backup Exec services.
Then under tools->options->catalog->uncheck Used storage based media and run the catalog operation again.

Unchecking the 'Use storage based media' and running the catalog operation again didn't work :(
Hello,
After having cataloged the tapes if you go to the restore selections in Backup Exec you would see the media set and also the respective dates from when you want to restore.
Let us know if this works

Thanks.
Cataloging the media gets the job half done unfortunately... For a restore to work properly, the media required for restore must ALL be inventoried. The catalogs themselves know what media GUID is required but until that GUID is contained in inventory, you'll get the 'invalid PVL media identifier' error. If you have the full set of catalog files imported from the original backup job, you should be able to go by the tape labels showing up in your restore selections...just be sure all tapes in the set are inventoried which means they should show up somewhere in the media screen in BE.

This may or may not be worth it, but it SHOULD avoid having to re-catalog all 300 tapes
If you still have the v7 server online, upgrade Backup exec to v8.6 , then v9.1, then upgrade again to v10 (all in demo mode, of course ;-) ) (see http://forums.veritas.com/discussions/thread.jspa?... for a 3878 install file )
then copy the IMG files to the new BackupServer's \Catalogs directory and then follow the technote to re-index a v10 server.
if that doesn't work, I'm out of suggestions

Hi,
Pleases let us know if your issue / problem is resolved so that we can archive this post. However, if the issues still persist then please update us on the same
Thank you

You need to perform an INVENTORY (not a catalog) of the 300+ tapes in order to perform a restore. It sounds like you have the catalog information, but your media database still needs additional information.
If you click on the media tab (all media) on your new version 10 system, this is the only media your system 'knows' about. When you inventory your old 7.X tapes, the media GUID will be entered into your new version 10.x database (and will populat the media tab. The catalog points to a tape GUID when invoking a restore, which queries the media database, which determines if the tape is online or offline, and the restore process continues on from there...
Hello Christopher,
Request you to please update on this issue.
Thanks
