Catalog replication from CAS to MMS

Created: 15 Mar 2012 | 7 comments

I'm looking for a way to replicate catalog information from my CAS to a MMS for DR purposes. MMS to CAS catalog information is ok, but CAS to MMS doens't seem to be an option.

I've got data that I'm duplicating between a CAS server and a MMS's dedupe folder that's housed offsite. The catalog information is retained on the CAS server.

If I need to restore data from the MMS side I need to catalog the media first.

I'm hoping there's some checkbox that I've missed somewhere... but I can't seem to find it.

I guess there is no option to replicate catalogs from CAS to MMS.

There is no option to replicate catalogs to the MMS.

To do what you want to di, you will need to have the CAS at the DR site and the MMS sending data to the CAS along with catalogs.

CraigV's picture could look at scripting a copy of those catalog files to the remote location, or simply using Windows's built-in backup utility to backup the changes, copy them to the remote location and restore.

It's unfortunately more of a manual process...

The OP on the link below managed to work something out, so it is worth a look...whether or not it either fits your requirements, or works is another story:

Intereting suggestion CraigV. This is going to take a lot of time and experimentation.

Too bad there's not some sort of built in "catalog all uncatalogued media" job that you could just run as a scheduled job.

This might be a dumb question, but this isn't a problem that SSO might help with is it? I thought SSO only allowed you to share a FC library amongst multiple BE servers, but I wonder if it does some sort of catalog replication too - so all participating BE servers know about what's on the media in the shared library.

Or install the CAS role at the DR site and not have to worry about scripting catalog copies to a server thats just going to send them BACK to the CAS anyways.

I don't think so. SAN SSO's job is to share SAN hardware amongst multiple SAN-attached servers. CASO would take over the role of replicating catalogs etc.

However, head on over to the Ideas section and add this certainly would be great functionality to have, and make a DR environment a lot more feasible with it.

Take a look at the private Cloud Whitepaper and read it as if the VPN link discussed in the document is just your WAN link. And then if the MMS is in the remote location tick the option to set this MMS as the private cloud server and that should cause the catalog files to end up on the MMS.
