Cataloging error--What media does it want?

This issue has been solved. See solution.

I received the following error when I catalog a backup set.
"The requested media (sequence number 2 in the media family being cataloged) was not listed in the catalog's media index, and therefore, it could not be mounted."

I understand the error and the cause. What I cannot find is a reference to what media it wants me to inventory. Is there a log, file or reference anywhere that will tell the label name of the tape it want?

History says: "To add the media's catalog information to the disk-based catalogs, run an inventory operation on the media and resubmit the Catalog operation."
what media?

I am running backupexec 10.1 rev 5629.

RE: Cataloging error--What media does it want?

What I cannot find is a reference to what media it wants me to inventory.

The job log for the run that created that/those tapes should list all media used in the job

So Backup Exec should be able

So Backup Exec should be able to create new catalogs right?

Because if you restore the latest backups to an image you made of a computer a month ago that image will not have the catalogs from the future. Or should I be backing up the catalogs separately?

RE: So Backup Exec should be able

Yes, you should be backing up the catalogs as well as the log files and the BEDB.bak file for disaster recovery purposes

If you do not know what tape volumes or BKF files are part of a multi-volume backup set, and you are faced with this error, you are pretty much up a creek

How should we backup these files?

How do you recommend that we backup these files?

Solution

See http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/307764.htm

Just make sure that the \Catalogs and \Data directories are included.  You should also be sure to get the BESERNUM.XML file that contains all installed serials  The location varies with the version.   v10x it shuold be in the Windows root (C:\WINDOWS )

You won't get the catalog for the backup that is occuring (of course) but will get all previous catalogs

if you do need the latest backup for a DR situation, then you'll have to inventory and catalog all tapes or BKF files that were used before you can restore

how about after changing the

how about after changing the tape, you run an inventory to let backup exec know that it is another tape then catalog the tape again.
the database maintenance option in backup will clear away some of the old catalog so that the database will not be too big
but you can uncheck on that option so that you do not require catalog the old tapes

You cannot inventory a tape after the first one has been ejected.  The running job still "owns" the drive
