Catalogs do not show

I installed version 10.0 SP1 on New Years and have what appears to be a working solution but when I attempt to restore files I do not see any catalogs at all. I searched the KB and found articles about older versions of BE that did not help. The BE database is on a SQL2000 server that is not on the Media Server. I used the search function in BE and could not locate any catalogs.

The Event viewer on the Media server shows.
--------------------------------------
Event Type:Error
Event Source:Backup Exec Catalog Server
Event Category:None
Event ID:34327
Date:1/16/2006

Computer:SMDC01
Description:
Update to catalog index (Catalog index database) failed.
Reason: Null connection object pointer cat_RecordSet::cat_RecordSet()
e:\caicosmp15520r\becat\beplugins\beimage\catalogindex.cpp(588)

I followed the link to lookup the event but did not find a solution. The folder ..\program files\veritas\backup exec\NT\catalogs contains files with the extension .IMG & .FH. Where should the catalogs be located, in the database or in a file? What are the catalog file names? Where do I go from here?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

What is the error message during the catalog operation?
Before doing the catalog perfrom an inventory and deselct an option "use storage media based catalogs" during the catalog.

There isn't any specific error in BE during the Backup or Catalog operation. The only thing I have is what is in the Windows Event Viewer. Here is another related example.
------------------------------------
Event Type:Information
Event Source:Backup Exec Catalog Server
Event Category:None
Event ID:34304
Date:1/16/2006
Time:5:45:41 PM
User:N/A
Computer:SMDC01
Description:
Catalog server (D:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\bengine.exe) started.
Catalog directory is D:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\Catalogs\.
Catalog server is SMDC01.
Database Connection String is "DRIVER=SQL Server;SERVER=SMDC01\BkupExec;DATABASE=BEDB".

The database is not on the SMDC01 server is has been moved using the provided utility to another server. How do we correct this?

Hello,

It seems the Catalogs do not show up while you wish to perform a restore. You can try to re-index the catalogs and then run the resotre. Refer to the following technote that provides steps on how Backup exec can be made to re-index catalogs.

Title: How to manually force Backup Exec to re-index the on-disk catalogs
http://support.veritas.com/docs/272886

Revert if the issue persists.

Maybe you haven't been following the whole issue here. The catalog does not appear therefore there is nothing to reindex. There are no .XML files in the "...\Veritas\Backup Exec\NT\Catalog" folder. However there are .XML files in the "...\Veritas\Backup Exec\NT\Data" folder. The only files in the "...\Veritas\Backup Exec\NT\Catalog" folder are .FH and .IMG. Where should these files reside? There are some .MDF files (bedb_dat.mdf & BE_DLO.mdf) with current dates in the "...\Veritas\Backup Exec\NT\Data" folder which appear to be database files; is this correct?

If the BE database has been moved from the Media Server MSDE database to a SQL2000 database does that include the catalog database? After moving the BE database from MSDE to SQL2000 I disabled the SQLAgent$BKUPEXEC service on the media server thinking that all database functions would now reside on the SQL2000 server. Is MSDE required on the Media server to run the Catalog Database? After re-enabling the above service I was able to get a valid catalog running but my desire is to have all database functions operate on the SQL2000 server. What am I missing to make this work as desired?

I'm in the EXACT same dilemma. I also have moved my db to SQL2000 and have since lost all my catalogs and the ONLY error I am getting is exactly the same on that Dennis posted above.

An uninstall is not a viable option as this backup server runs multiple drives and is running 24/7/365

Hello Dennis,

The database quite evidently hasn't been moved properly to the SQL database, the registry entries still point to the \Veritas\Backup Exec\NT\Catalog path. What procedure did you use to migrate the db? Did you use the Beutility?

Yes, I used the BEUtility to move the database. How do we recover from this failed process?
