Symantec doesn't support it. We did look in to supporting Cent OS quite a while ago because I believe the Kernel is basically the same as one of our supported versions if I remember correctly. But I think the decision was made not to support it at some point.

So it can be made to work, but in general it could limit your ability to get technical support.

A better option might be looking in to the Symantec Brightmail Gateway 8.0.1 on ESXi. You should be entitled to this.

    Thanks!

    Hello again.

Sorry for being an importunate person =).

I tried to install the Mail security for SMTP gateway 5.0 to CentOS. At first the error is, it says that it is not supported on my machine. I checked the install script and i've seen that it searches the OS distro and version in /etc/redhat-release. What I do is I change the entry of  /etc/redhat-release to ES release 3 and then the installer continues. After several hours of troubleshooting and testing, I finished installing it to CentOS. I can access the https://localhost:41443 but I stop in the registration process.

My question is, do i violate any software agreement to what i've done? If yes, i will not insist on continuing this but if not, i will continue on the registration if it will  become successful and able to filter messages.

I just got curious on installing it to CentOS so please give me an advise. I also don't know if what I've written here was kinda confidential so just delete my post if you find it so.

    Thank you.

    Hi Trik,

could you please let me know which version of SMTP5 you're installing on CentOS?
AFAIK, if you work with the latest version of SMTP5 you shouldn't need to change the installer script, as it should detect (and install over) your OS.

Please also note that CentOS is not among the supported operating systems for SMSMTP5: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-gate.nsf/docid/2007578735768898

In conclusion, yes it should be possible to install and run SMSSMTP5 on CentOS (at least version 4 or later). In case you're already using the latest SMSSMTP version (5.0.1), please post a screenshot of the error you're receiving within the registration process so we can help you.

    Thanks

Although CentOS has the original kernel as Red Hat, there could be other files required for SMS to run in CentOS. I think you should stay with Red Hat. Besides there are many things in Red Hat that is not available for CentOS.

The only limitation that you are going to have is with support. So you shouldn't have any problems with actually running the program. But just be warned that if there is anything OS specific that goes wrong, we wont be able to help.

The steps you have followed are generally what people would do to get around the installer script issues with the version, so no worries there. Development has pretty much stopped on SMTP 5 aside from possibly if there are any large issues found, so you also shouldn't need to worry about versioning when it comes to the operating system.

So again the decision was made to not technically "support" CentOS, although the program was developed to be able to run on CentOS fully with the current versions. It was just not added to the install script as a supported version which is why you had to implement the work around you did.

    Hope all works well!
    Thanks!
