  • 1.  Is changing the name of the NS possible and supported?

I was always told that you cannot change the name of the NS.  However, we're looking to move Altiris to our other datacenter.  Server names are based on which DC they are in, so I need to change its name.  I opened a ticket with support and they said that it was easy to do, and supported.  However, I just stumbled across this

    Who's right?

    Hi Zac,

I've always avoided name changes where possible as you can expect issues like the one pointed out in the technote you linked to. If you need to do it, I would suggest you request support to put it in writing that it's supported. That way if you run into issues you can get assistance.

I'd suggest trying to get a variance to your SOE for this as it might be something of a pain. Another option (assuming you are running either 6.x or 7.0) would be to use this opportunity to migrate over to 7.1 on 64bit. Seems to me like the perfect time to do this and it would be less messy than trying to do a name change.

    Regards

    Ben

Yeah, we're already on 7.1.  I do have it in writing that changing of the NS is supported.  I'm still just a little hesitant obviously.  Even if it is supported, I certainly don't have the time to blow should the whole process break down.

If we end up doing it, I will certainly post the results back in this thread.
