Cheap NAS with replication enabled for Enterprise Vault

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi All,

I'm looking for a low cost solution of NAS with replication enabled between PROD and DR sites, this is to replace and migrate the existing expensive LUNs that is presented to the EV 9.0.4 VMs

Any suggestion and solution would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Not necessarily a hardware solution but you could check out Quadrotechs EV NearSync, should be marginally cheaper than a HW solution

Thanks people, the current EMC CX4-240 doesn't have the capability to create CIFS share, so using only the software solution is not enough.

with EMC VNX5000 series yes it is possible.

Hi

EV does not have the ability to write to something else as NTFS or CIFS on those systems, so you have to present it somehow to an EV Server. The EV NearSync agent is then installed on the EV Server where it is perfectly able to fetch the data.

Thanks Michel,

Does this means that the existing Vault Store partition can be migrated / consolidated into one big CIFS share ?

And then in the EV VM the agent doing the replication using Windows Explorer file transfer API ?

Hi John

It all depends on what you want to do.
You certainly can consolidate all Vault Stores into one big CIFS share if you like, but that does not have anything to do with EV NearSync.

EV NearSync just replicates your data from A to B. A and B have to be CIFS accessible (which they are if they are LUN's mounted to a Windows host)

So you can replicate all your Vault Store from a LUN on a Windows Server onto some other CIFS Share. You can replicate all LUN's to the same target CIFS Share if you like.

Maybe you should talk a little more about your scenario. How is EV / Vault Stores set up currently? What is your end-goal? What are the motivations behind this project?

Many thanks for the willingness to help Michel, here's my response:

How is EV / Vault Stores set up currently?

The EV Vault Store at the moment is set as LUN presented from the EMC CX4-240 Storage Array into the Enterprise Vault Server 9.0.4 Virtual Machine as Physical RDM (Windows Drive)

What is your end-goal?

1. Reduce the number of drive in use as we are running out of disk letters
2. Reclaim the disk space of expensive SAN / Storage array so that we can free up ~7 TB in total
3. Eliminates the EMC Replication manager complexities with the SAN copies.

What are the motivations behind this project?

The motive behind this project is cost saving and most importantly the Disaster Recovery test, because at the moment we haven't tried to bring up the EV Server 9.0.4 VM in the disaster recovery

OK, so you currently have already a Desaster replication using EMC SAN Copy.

What is your end-goal?

1. Reduce the number of drive in use as we are running out of disk letters
2. Reclaim the disk space of expensive SAN / Storage array so that we can free up ~7 TB in total

  • These two can be done by buying appropriate cheaper storage. (Don't go too cheap tough, as you still need OK performance. I guess your storage team / storage vendors can guide you here). By using CIFS as your EV Storage, you can totally eliminate drive letters.

3. Eliminates the EMC Replication manager complexities with the SAN copies.

  • Here, EV NearSync can help. Either in your existing environment, by using mounting the source and target LUN to a VM in each site, and let EV NearSync replicate them instead of SAN Copy OR
  • In the new Environment with CIFS, where EV NearSync replicates the data from source NAS to target NAS directly using CIFS (agent still needs to be installed somewhere)

Michel

Cool, many thanks once again Michel

So in this case I'll find something like Thecus or Drobo drives to be the CIFS share.
