Citrix Wanscaler
Updated: 22 May 2010 | 4 comments
Has anyone had any exposure to this product and it's usage with Software Delivery or Patching downloads? We have tested it and do not see any improvements in download speeds. Is there any special method that we should be using to help see a download improvement once this technology has been applied to a remote office? The Citrix folks think that Altiris compresses the package and thus their wanscaler can't help unless it is sent through un-compressed and their technology does the compression.

Using Citrix Wanscaler
The functionality of the wanscaler is to keep downloaded software in a kind of cache. If a second user downloads this, the wanscaler sees the same chekcsum and deploys it from within the cache rather then downloading it again.
We have bad experience with the wanscaler in Altiris deployment environments.
It is more easy to build a Altiris multisite environment. And it is cheaper also.

Compression should be set at the agent config level
I believe that is the only place where traffic can be adjusted for compression. I've never found any other references of compression built into Altiris.

Look at Riverbed...
... if there is one product that DOES help it is Riverbed
