  • 1.  Clarification needed on relocating the SEPm 12.X content folder

I have read the doc here: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH148333  that explains the procedure and lists the steps below:

Steps to create and map a content folder in another disk or partition:

    1. Install another disk drive at the SEPM server.
    2. Using the Windows Disk Manager, format and initialize the disk.
    3. When the disk is ready and online, create a new folder on it and name it content.
    4. Stop the SEPM, database and all other related services.
    5. Go to C:\Program Files\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\Inetpub\content and move all the content of this folder to the new folder created in the new disk drive.
    6. Remove the folder C:\Program Files\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\Inetpub\content.
    7. Create a new shortcut and point to the folder named content in the new disk drive.
    8. Test the access to the shortcut.
    9. Start the SEPM and database services.

My issue is with step 6 and 7, and exactly where and how my shortcut needs to be configured to point to the new location. For example let's say my new content directory is "D:\content". Does this mean for step 7. I need to create a shortcut in C:\Program Files\Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager\Inetpub\"shortcut to D:\content.lnk" and restart the services?  Will the SEPm database services automatically accept that and work?  Not sure if I need a specfic name, syntax, or folder permissions on the new directory (doc is a bit vague).  I'm also concerned what the implications would be when time to upgrade the server SEPm from 12.1.3 to 12.1.5.

    Please advise,

    Hi Brian,

So SEPm is smart enough to search for any name shortcut in the default inetpub folder that successfully references the content location?  And this new location will work with no problems even after a SEPm upgrade?

That's implied. I would suggest verifying with support.

    Hi Jonesl15,

I would not recommend you to apply such process but rather recommend you the upgrade of your SEPM to 12. RU5 now available for download. Why? Because RU5 includes a major improvement in the way the content is stored.

To give you a quick idea, now 30 revisions with a SEPM RU5 are equal to 2 to 3 Gb of space ONLY, whereas prior RU5 the size was over 50 Gb!

Upgrading would most likely solve your disk space issue!

Go ahead and test it! Do not hesitate to contact the support to get further details.

I checked with a support tech and they verified a shortcut will suffice.  However they also advised me that 12.1 RU5 would mitigate the need to relocate the content directory.  Though I haven't put a copy into my test lab to verify yet.

Thanks to you and Shulk on this.
