  • 1.  Clarify SEP 12.1 education licensing rules?

    Posted Feb 09, 2015 06:57 PM

This is regarding the following, which doesn't say it is either "Enterprise" nor "Small business"...

    - SYMC ENDPOINT PROTECTION 12.1 PER USER BNDL VER UG LIC ACAD BAND A ESSENTIAL 12 MONTHS, QTY:200

    - SYMC ENDPOINT PROTECTION 12.1 PER USER I/O ESSENTIAL 12 MONTHS, QTY:200

Is Symantec Endpoint Protection for USA public school districts, version 12 and going forward, required to be renewed annually?

Does the license file need to be kept continuously active in order to receive antivirus definitions?

Or is is license file renewal mainly necessary in order to receive major software bugfixes and new-OS (Windows 10 etc) support updates?

    ,

What happens when the expiration date is reached in the console? Does the console stop functioning? Do the defintion updates stop getting applied?

Is it a violation of the EULA to continue to use SEP 12.1 after the license expiration date in the SEP Manager Console?

    ,

I'm trying to figure out if we are expected to be forking out thousands of dollars yearly to Symantec to stay in license compliance to receive 12.1 defintion updates (I'm not too concerned about getting bugfix releases).

If yes, then perhaps next year when the 12.1 license period expires, we should switch to the completely free Avast for Education program.

License expiration date is mention in Console Admin Tab.

Admin - License - In right hand side it display license expiration date.

    When ever the license expire

    Types of enforcement

When the license goes out of compliance the Symantec Endpoint Protection product goes into enforcement mode. There are two types of enforcement

    1)  Hard Enforcement: SEP 12.1 Small Business Edition

    • Content update downloads stop for both server and clients. In Small Business Edition it's 1:1 mapping with CAT server.
    • UI changes and log notifications are started.

    2)  Soft Enforcement: SEP 12.1 Enterprise Edition

    •  Content update downloads continue from all the sources.
    •  UI changes and log notifications are started.

I believe you can do a 1 or 3 year renewal.

You will receive a license file, which will contain the expiration date. If you're running SBE and the license expires, defs will stop. If running Enterprise, you will continue to get updates even after expiration.

    See this article:

Maintenance entitlement overview for Endpoint Protection

The console does not stop functioning after expiration. Again if running SEB, defs stop. With enterprise, they do not.

Yes you would be in violation and would need to renew.
