    This error appears in the logs on our Brightmail Message Fillter, which I am evaluating.

    Cleaner: unable to connect to any SMTP servers.

    and

    Error reading from SMTP server: smtp_get_result

    The server also has Symantec Corporate AV installed and it appears to be deleting security risks in the following folder.

    D:\WINDOWS\Temp\bmidir1\
    D:\WINDOWS\Temp\bmidir2\

    Is this related?

    if this is the cause, then which folders should be excluded from normal AV scanning?

    Update : Excluding D:\WINDOWS\Temp\* stops these errors, but what is happening to the risks that AV was blocking, which was "Packed.Generic.230" with a randomly named .

    Not happy that Brightmail appears to be moving these security risks around my server or that excluding all of the temp dir is a good solution

    Hi Colin,

    If you are having brightmail antispam then it will scan for antivirus too. If you will not excude the Windows temp, inet pub & complete brightmail antispam folder then the brightmail server will scan for the email passing throug it but at the same time the AV will scan the brightmail database which craete a conflict & even problem for the Brightmail server.
