    Posted Jan 07, 2013 10:34 AM

    I need a solution.

I have noticed the only clean way to upgrade a SEP 11 client from, say RU4 to RU7 is to

    1. Run cleanwipe

    2. Do fresh install of RU7

Here is the problem - when we send out technicians to run cleanwipe on an ORPHANED SEP 11 client, it asks for uninstall password, which we are not allowed to give out. And if technician does Add/Remove program, it also asks for SEP 11 uninstall password even though this is an ORPHANED SEP 11 client.

How to run cleanwipe on an ORPHANED sep client without providing password. Or, is there a workaround, such as deleting certain registry keys? From there, we can install later version of SEP 11.

    Try this

    1. Open the registry
    2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\SMC
    3. Change the value for SmcGuiHasPassword from 1 to 0

    Run Cleanwipe

Brian, but doesn't changing the Registry key require stopping the smc service, making the change, and then restarting the smc service? And doesn't that also require a password?

I am looking for a way for on-site technician (because I cannot remotely access the SEP client) to run cleanwipe without knowing password.

Well it may depend on what version of CW you're running. I saw this with older versions of it however the latest version, 12.1.2, I have not seen this.

Here is an article on the newest CW:

Is the one you are using? It has been updated pretty nicely.

Symantec requires a support case be logged in order to get the latest version.

I opened a case using their website, and it asks me to register, even though I already registered. Then when I entered in the inforamation about my case, I get an email that says

Thank you for contacting Symantec Enterprise Support Services.

Case Number [will PM this number upon request] has been created.

We received your request and are working to grant you access to view and manage your support cases.

A separate case will be created for the technical issue indicated in your request. You will receive an email with the case number.

What was wrong with the old website, why is it worse now??? angryangryangry
