Client Deployment Wizard

Created: 31 Mar 2013 | 11 comments

Hi all,

Since upgrading from Enpoint Protection 11->12 when the Client Deployment Wizard searches for clients it seems to still locate all clients on the network which have already been upgraded to version 12, when I used to use 'Find unmanaged Clients' in version 11 it would only ever find unmanaged clients.  With version 12 I have to go through the list it finds and deselect every client which is already upgraded.  Does anyone know how to only search for unmanaged clients in version 12?? This function worked perfectly well under version 11.

Cheers,

Alex

I have just been referred to the following thread https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/whe... whereby it appears that some one on the development team decided to completely remove the 'find unmanaged clients' feature from the current release. As a number of people have suggested why would anyone want to use the 'deployment wizard' to roll out the machines at already have the current  version installed!!!! Symantec really screwed this up didn't they.

Why would I want to run a 'client deployment wizard' to install on PC's which the client already installed, which rock scientist came up with this feature?

Hi,

Unmanaged detectors tab is no more exist with SEP 12.1. CDW will be used to search the clients. I also think they should bring back unmanaged detector tab instead of improvement in CDW.

Hi

In SEP 12.1 the feature to find Unmanaged client is not there.  We can configure Unmanaged detector to find Unmanged clients and configure the notification for the same.

Hello,

Check this Thread: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/how-do-i-find-unmanaged-computers-also-deployment-doesnt-work

With SEP12, we decided to merge the old clientremote tool and Find Unmanaged Computers into one.  The new version is called the Client Deployment Wizard.

You can find it in two places - first from the Home screen, choose "Install Protection Client to Computers" from the "Common Tasks" drop down at the top right, or alternatively, from the Clients tab, when you are in the client list, click "Add a Client" on the left hand side, just above "Add computer account"

Both will launch the CDW and allow you to search your network, find all your PC's and helps you deploy the right client to each one.

Idea has been raised for same to bring it back, you can vote for same

In your case, you could use the "UnManaged Detector" as an option.

Upon booting, a computer sends out Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) traffic to identify itself on a network. Once enabled, the Unmanaged Detector listens for gratuitous ARP traffic and collects Internet Protocol (IP) and Machine Address (MAC) data from traffic passing it on the local network. This data is then forwarded to the Unmanaged Detector’s SEPM which compares the IP address and MAC address of detected systems against its known list of managed endpoint clients and reports on the unmanaged endpoint clients.

An unmanaged detector is configured by right-clicking a managed SEP client in the Clients page of the SEPM console, and selecting "Make unmanaged detector".

Best Practices: When to use the "Find Unmanaged Computers" or "Unmanaged Detector" features in Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0

What does it mean to set a client as an Unmanaged Detector?

Hi Mithum, Thanks for your explanation of how the 'Unmanaged Detector' works, it seems that a function 'Find unmanaged Clients' that just worked under version 11 has been turned into some kind of unnecessary nightmare' in version 12. Reading the Symantec forums and many others external to Symantec there are a lot of people asking the question why was this feature changed when it 'just worked'. When a users wants to deploy a client 99 times out of 100 they just want to deploy it to unmanaged clients they don't want to mess around trying to setup unmanaged detectors whatever they are.

Hello,

Thanks for your inputs.

I agree there are lots of Symantec Endpoint Protection users who would like to have the legacy functionality of "Find Unmanaged Computers" back again.

I would request you to add your suggestions in the IDEA :

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/ideas/sepm12-bring-back-find-unmanaged-computers-sepm11

The Client Deployment Wizard in SEP 12.1.2 (RU2) has close to a 10 fold improvement in performance for the remote deployment over what SEP 12.1 had.  SEP 12.1.2 should address the issues mentioned here.

Note: the workflow does not change but it is made faster and more reliable.

Hope that helps!!
