This issue has been solved. See solution.

When you have software compression enabled for a backup job, is this compression done client or server side? For instance, if i backup a remote server, will the data be compressed before or after it is transferred to the Backup Exec server.

Hi,

Unless you're backing up to a dedupe folder, all compression is done on the device.

Thanks!

I believe that the BE remote agent does compression before sending it across the network, but I cannot find a definitive source to cite right now.

Regardless, software compression is either done at the remote agent or the BE media server, never on the device.  When it is done in the device (assuming a tape drive), it is called hardware compression.
