This issue has been solved. See solution.

Environment info:

BackupExec 2010 R3 - SP4 Media Server w/ Dedup Option

Windows 2012 R2 Client - RAWS Agent from SP4 installed (enabled for client side dedup).

Question:

Is this combination of media server and client supported?  RAWS installed - so I figured it was at least worth a shot.

Issue:

Dedup based backup job of the 2012 R2 client works fine provided that I use Media Server deduplication - same job fails when using Client side deuplication.  If I monitor the job - it stays queued and appears to be constantly reserving/releasing the dedup 'tapes'.  Sample SGMON output follows.

I'm quite happy with my existing 2010 R3 environment prior to getting the itch to test a 2012 R2 target.  If I can continue to run backups with this setup for another year or two and add 2012 R2 servers to the mix that would be ideal.  Is there any chance at all that this is a fixable issue?!?

Update - job does run to completion - I was just ending it prematurely as it did not appear to be doing anything.  I left the office for a few days and forgot to put the test job on hold.  Came back to find it had run successfully but had burned 5+ hours doing nothing before the backup actually started.  This fell to 30+ minutes on the next successive run.  I then rebooted the target server and it jumped back to over 1.5 hours.  The 11 minute run is with dedup option set to execute on media server rather than on client:

Protecting a 2012 r2 remote server will be supported in Backup Exec 2014.

The Beta is now closed but this link refers to some of the things that are charted to be supported in Backup Exec 2014 https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/blogs/backup-exec-beta-program
