Clients not downloading packages from local site server

Created: 24 Jun 2013 | 3 comments

Hello all.  I am currently running DS 7.1 SP2 in our environment.  We have a site in which the clients are trying to download packages from the Notification Server instead of their local site server.  I've logged onto multiple workstations at the site and each workstation lists its local site server as the task server.  I've reset the agent and I've tried re-deploying software to those workstations with no luck.  The Altiris logs for each client show that they are trying to download the packages from the Notification Server, which does not have the package service installed.  Does anyone have any suggestions short of removing and re-adding  the task/package server role from the local site server?

Think of Task and Package services as being completely unrelated. Check in the NS console Settings > Notification Server > Site Server Settings that the Package Service is shown as OK. It can then take time for the NS to update it's package sources list to supply to the clients for each package.

Check on the Site Server's agent Pacakge Server tab that it has the package downloaded.

Check in the Package Properties in the Software Resource that it is set to go to all Package Servers.

andykn101,

The Package Service is shown as 'OK'.

The package has downloaded onto the local site server as well.  It does not show any packages in a "pending" or "retry download" state.  The local site server also has the correct number of packages it should have.

The software package is set to replicate to all Package Servers.

I have also looked at a handful of clients at that site and noticed, in "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\SoftwareManagement\SoftwareDelivery\{PackageGUID}\package.xml", this message:

-<Package id="{PackageGUID}" name="" size="0" version="1371558348" remote="true" priority="Normal" status="retrying" minspeed="0" enableMulticast="false" statusDescription="No package sources returned by server">

       <SiteQuery url=http://NotificationServerName.FQDN.com/Altiris/NS/Agent/GetPackageInfo.aspx resource="{PackageGUID}" type="codebases" />

    </Source>

  </Package>

Usually this message goes after a while, after the NS has understood that the Package Server has the package it should eventually tell the client that it's avaialbe from that PS.

If it takes more then 24 hours you might need to start looking for errors in your NS log.
