  • 1.  Clone and Modify "Send automated Patch report e-mail" for Results

Can the "Send automated Patch report e-mail" automation policy task in SMP 7.1 be easily modified so that the message displays the "results" of the report instead of a link to the report?  I'm finding a link to be quite useless whenever I don't have immediate access to the SMP server.

I oftentimes monitor (NOT usually VPNed in) my e-mail away from work so certainly can't hit the SMP server directly to pull up the report.  Also, if I don't pull up the report by the next day or two even with access to my SMP server, clicking the link produces no results since the software bulletins have already exceeded their TimeValue span.  Heck, I already have my "New Software Bulletin Available" automation policy's TimeValue parameter set to 72 hours which results in maybe 2 duplicate messages but having a lower value oftentimes produces no message whatsoever so don't mind the extra message.

Anyhow, I'm not familiar with HTML so would appreciate someone explaining whether the send patch report task I mentioned can show the actual results of the report in the e-mail message instead of just a link?  Thanks in advance!

    Clint

There is a KB article for this that I can't find.  However this link may help:

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/how-e-mail-results-report-ns-7

The key is using %!Results!% in the content of the email

Thanks for the tip and you're right in that the trick seems to be incorporating $!Results!% into the task.  Found evidence of this from several KB/forum articles.  HOWTO21604 is for SMP 7.0 (I'm running 7.1) but the idea is the same and something I have yet to test.

I just cloned my existing New Software Bulletin Available automation policy and used HOWTO21604 as a guide to fill in the blanks (e.g. set my evaluation rule to "Run for non-empty data" and used the "Send automation policy e-mail" for the action).  To get some test results, I cranked up my TimeValue parameter in the query for the amount of hours to cover a couple weeks but the "Results" tab only returned a single line (the last 5/17/12 QuickTime update).  In other words, I was expecting to see the new bulletins available within the last 2 weeks including this month's Microsoft updates but only got one hit.  Any ideas what I'm missing?

I've found potential issues in my selections (e.g. "Run for non-empty data" apparently should only be used if the data source is a report and not a table) so decided to forget about getting results into my e-mail messages in this case.

If I don't have access to my SMP server, I'll just use the existing New Software Bulletins Available automation policy messages as reminders to check my SMC when I get back to the office.  Figured if I'm away from the office, why should I care what it's alerting me to because it's not like I'd have to push the update ASAP under most circumstances.

Sorry...my failure to think things totally through although had to ask because my Altiris 6 server delivers results in its New Software Bulletins Available messages unlike SMP's default.
