Co-locating EV and SQL Reporting

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi all,

For once, I need a solution :)

I looked through this guide on troubleshooting FSA reporting:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH51475

In the EV 9 & 10 document on page 28 it says:

<snip>

Note you cannot co-locate an Enterprise Vault server and the Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services on a 64-bit computer

</snip>

My question is ... Why?

I have it on my EV 10.0.2 system, with SQL 2008.  And it works (apart from the style sheets being all broken, but that I suspect is my flakey installation, rather than reference to the comment above).

Hope someone can shed some light on it....

My best guess is because of SSRS trying to use http.sys instead of its own IIS server? i have no idea other than that

Not sure what that means, but, wouldn't that be the same if it was 32 bit also?

errr well, erm, EV10 obviously is 64bit only, but EV9 obviously isn't

And with SSRS in 2008 and 2012, you no longer need an IIS server for the /reports/ directory, it uses http.sys which is the core of IIS anyway

Ok.  Would be handy to know the reason for the comment in the troubleshooting guide though (since it also covers EV 9)

LOL you are familiar with EV's documentation right?

Indeed.  Hence seeking clarification, wondering if any of the Symantec Support TSE lurkers will comment, whether anyone has done this in the field, etc...

Rob,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

The origin of the issue is likely to relate to the way MSRS on x64 runs in an x64 application pool, whereas the EV web apps run in a 32-bit application pool. In windows 2003 you had to run all of your app pools either as 32 or 64 bit, whereas in Windows 2008 you get to choose the bitness of the application pool.

So I suspect this issue goes away if you are running on Windows 2008, whatever your EV version, but we won't know for sure until the technote is updated, which is currently WIP.

Confirmed - the problem applies only to Windows 2003 x64, as you don't run 32 and 64 bit app pools side by side. For Windows 2008 R2x64 co-location is fine. The docs will be updated in due course.
