A communications failure has occurred - exchange 2003
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 7 comments
We're backing up an exchange server that also has the tape drive and backupexec 10d installed on it. We occasionally get "A communications failure has occurred" errors and the job fails. The detail come up with the exchange server is not responding. The following article, "255814" discusses the issue but has obvious errors. There's not such thing as an M drive with exchange 2003 as is stated in the article, so there's no way for me to remove it and thus correct the problem as the article discribes. Should this perhaps mean to say the exchange databases, or what exactly. Please correct this error in the article and let us know what can be done for those of us using exchange 2003. Cheers

Hi,
What is the version of Backup Exec ?
Have you also installed Exchange 2003 SP2 ?
Is AOFO activated for this backup ?
Update us on the same and revert for any further Query
Hope this will help you
Thank you

Hello,
On the remote exchange server is the remote agent updated?
Check that the remote agent service is running under local system account on the media as well as the remote server.

The exchange server is local to the drive, but the remote agent service is running. We've installed no updates to backup exec, nor did I see any mention of the remote agent when I checked the update site, unless it is bundled into SP1. Please advise.
Hello,
We suggest you to follow the steps below:
1. Go to Tools/options
2. Under Network Interface select "Use any available Network Adapter"
Kindly refer the following Document:
"A communications failure has occurred between the Backup Exec job engine and the remote agent" (a00084f9 HEX or e00084f9 HEX) is reported in the job log while performing a backup of a remote computer

Done, but as the problem only occurs once every couple of weeks whether or not this did anything is yet to be seen. The exchange server is local to the drive though, which has not been addressed in this article. Anything further?
Hi,
If you are running a fullbackup that is - Partitions+Shadow Copy Components+Exchange in one job, try splitting the job -i.e. Job 1 -Partitions+Shadow Copy Components
Job 2- Exchange resources.
If running to a tape, try running as test to a Backup to Disk folder.
