Compression not working E0008703

I have Symantec Backup exec 12 on an SBS 2003 standard server.
I also have a HP DAT 72 tape drive
Backups had been running fine until a few weeks ago consistantly backing up 51Gb
I have been using hardware compression if not software compression.
An error appeared E0008703 and it seems the compression isn't working.
I have had to split the backup as compression shows only 1:1
The most I have backed up is 31Gb on a single tape.
If there is a problem with the hardware why will software not work?
Can I change the compression ratio manually?
What should I do to fix this?

Did you try software
Did you try software compression only setting? If you select "hardware, if not software" option, it finds that hardware compression is available and sends the request to hardware, possibly hardware fails to do so.. and hence software compression never takes place because the request is already sent to hardware. Try software only as a setting and observe the results.

Yes I have tried software only compression.
I also tried hardware only with no luck.
same error appears E0008703
