Compression problem ?

I believe I may have a problem with compression, only getting about 420Gb on a 400/800Gb tape. (LTO3)

The setup is this:

Overnight, a Backup-to-disk is made of some servers to a folder on the backup server.
When this is done, a tape backup takes a backup of this folder. This backup has started to fail now when the amount of data has increased.

But a 400/800 LTO3 tape should be able to hold more than 420Gb right ? (with compression)
Feels like the compression isn't working.

I have set compression type to: "Hardware, Otherwise Software" on every Backup-to-disk job and also for the tape backup job.

When I check one of the tapes I see that the compression ratio is 1,04:1 - 1,06:1
is this really the best compression this setup can manage ?
The backup-to-disk folders compression is 1:1.

Or is there something I have forgotten to get compression working ?

Any help would be appreciated !

Well if you're compressing the B2D job first of all then I wouldn't expect you to get much in the way of compression when you then back that data up to tape (since hardware compression generally works better than software I suspect that explains the small amount of compression you are getting).

The big question really is why you don't seem to be getting any compression on the B2D job. As an experiment can you try turning off compression on the B2D job, and then see what the compression ratio turns out to be with the tape backup, as it could simply be that the compression ratio that's being reported for the B2D job is wrong, and isn't properly showing that it is working.
