Compression Problems

Created: 04 Feb 2005 • Updated: 22 May 2010 | 2 comments

I have Exec ver 9.1 with a Sony AIT drive, The compression ratio reported is 0.963:1. it seems that the data is being expanded as its written to the tape. These are 35GB native tapes and I can't get more that about 33Gb. nowhere near the 45 I need. Any suggestions or possible fixes? Thanks In advance.

Hi,

In order to isolate the issue, perform the following :

- Perform a long erase on the media.
- Perform backup job till the data is filled by performing an overwrite backup job.
- Use Software compression and verify the results.
- Ensure that the compression is enabled.
- Try using a new tape media.
- Run a backup job using a backup to folder and verify the results for the same backup set. Verify the results.

We hope this will help.

Also, data that has already been compressed or random data (such as encrypted data or MPEG files.) may actually expand by about five percent if you attempt to compress it further.

Typically, the database data, executables and graphics files generally compress the least, and regular text and data files will compress the most.
