  • 1.  Computer account when re-imaging XP workstation

    Hello,

I have tried to search answer to my question but haven't found any.

In final stage of my image deployment job, computer is joined to domain using netdom.exe utility and %COMPUTERNAME% variable with domain credentials.

If I re-image workstation, which was previously joined to Active Directory domain and computer account still exist in Active Directory, do I need to remove this computer account prior re-imaging computer if "new OS" is installed using same computer name as previously?

How you manage this issue in your environments?

I'm pretty sure, but you might need to test that.  My personal experience suggests that this works either way, but maybe there's a difference in how you use netdom.  THAT, I'm not sure of.  I always scripted it in the past, so I'm not positive of how NetDom works.

My 2 cents.  I'm not a pro on that.

    Hi Weedee,

we use Netdom to join machines back to the AD and it will definitely jump back onto the same object. we have been using this for our build processes for Windows XP for a few years without duplicates or not working clients in the AD.

For Windows 7, I have actually moved away from Netdom (even though you could use an x64 version of that) and am using a very simple PS script to do that. If you're interested, let me know and I will pass it on or post it here...
