  • 1.  Computer Name in Template

    Hi,

I'm having problems using the computer name field in the configuration templates. I have all my computers in folders in the GC based on their physical location, I'd like to be able to setup the template so that it would automatically give them a name with a number appended to the end of it. An example would be SD2-XP01 through to SD2-XP30. The problem comes about when I try to setup the template for the computers in a particular folder.

If I enter SD2-XP** into the computer name field on the template when I attempt to run the task I get an error stating the computer name field can't be used because it wouldn't create enough unique names. I have about 250 computers in total.

Can you do what I'm trying to do or not? If I put in three asterisk it works but it labels the computers starting at 170 (ie. SD2-XP170...SD2-XP199). It don't understand why it does this.

    Thanks

Originally, in the early (6.x) versions of Ghost Enterprise the numbers assigned to computers in the templates were numbered from 1, but customers said they would prefer something that always assigned the same number. So, we changed it so that the number that replaces the **'s is taken from the internal database key for the machine, which starts at 1 and always goes to one after the last from then on (so gradually over time the numbers do creep up a bit).

We're open to suggestions as to alternative ways to doing things in the templates (personally, I'd always wished that there was a free-form note field or two in the machine properties where people could put whatever they liked, and have a way of substituting in that instead of or as well as a number).

    Thanks Nigel.

If it was up to me I'd have a range field in the template that it uses to replace the **'s with and then when it applied it to the computers in a folder it did it using the order that they are listed in. We as users can easily change the order by changing the name. This would ensure that the computers always received the same number.

    Scott.
