Computer vs. Virtual Machines

Created: 27 Oct 2011 | 5 comments

The virtual machines in my environment all have the agent installed on them and they are reporting inventory back to the Virtual Machine resource type as they should.  The problem is that for every virtual machine I have, I get a record in my Computers resource type that has a different GUID and never run inventory.  Same computer name, one agent, but I get two different records with two different GUID's so inventory data only ties back to the virtual machine record.  How do I fix this problem?

Where are these virtual machines hosted?

Most of them are hosted on VM-ESX servers.  Some are hosted on workstations throughout the building.

Looks like a known issue in 6.x, which does not occur in 7.x:

Does this seem to describe the issue?

Part of this is similar, I am ending up with two records, one of which has inventory information and the other does not, but my issues is actually the exact opposite problem.  I want the resource to convert to virtual machine which it seems to be doing, but it is also leaving a computer resource record in the system.  I want it to convert to virtual and get rid of the computer record.

We are not importing computers from Active Directory currently

One of the Scheduled Tasks on the NS should clear this up. I believe it is either the NS.Nightly or NS.Daily that performs similar actions to the NS.ModifyVirtualMachineItemResourceType that was found in 6.x as this task is not present in 7.1.

Perhaps one of your scheduled tasks are not completing as it should. You can run these manually through Windows without affecting anything on the console side.
