Concurrent Backups
Created: 18 Jul 2012 | 4 comments
Hi, just working on scheduling our backup jobs and note that by default, the be appliance 3600 R2 is configured to run 2 concurrent jobs. Is this the max recommended for the appliance? The BE 2012 admin guide doesn't provide specific recommendations as there are a lot of variables such as hardware specs, network speed etc, however, in the case of the appliance, the number of variables are much fewer. Any suggestions?

Yup you can up it. Keep going up till performance goes down
There is an online portal, save yourself the long hold times. Create ticket online, then call in with ticket # in hand :-) http://mysupport.symantec.com "We backup data to restore, we don't backup data just to back it up."
The maximum concurrent operations supported by the appliance, running BE2012, is 32. Heed teiva-boy's words though. As the concurrency rate increases the overall performance will decrease.
It will depend on if and where you are deduplicating. With Appliance side deduplication, 6 concurrent jobs is probably the limit before performance degrades. If using client side deduplication it may be more.
Similarly, schedule replication (optimised duplication) jobs and or verification jobs to run outside of your backup window if possible, but certainly not at the same time as backups are running. Reading and writing concurrently from the dedupe folder should be avoided.
As with any new backup regime keep a close eye on it over the next couple of months and tweak it until you get max performance. My personal opinion is that you won't be able to run 32 concurrent jobs on the BE 3600, but give it a go and see how you do.
