Configuration service stops constantly
Updated: 20 Aug 2010 | 7 comments
I tried to upgrade from GSS1.1 to 2.0 and had some problems, so I decided to start over with just installing GS 2.0. Its installs fine but the configuration service always stops after a few seconds. I get an error in the event log that says:
Faulting application ngserver.exe, version 11.0.0.1502, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.1830, fault address 0x0002f344. The Symantec Ghost Configuration Server service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 4 time(s).
I've reinstalled several times and this still happens. GSS 2.0 is installed on a Windows 2003 server with SP2 installed. I've checked for virus and spyware and haven't found anything.

I, too, have seen this problem. Most of our Ghost Servers are Dell PowerEdge SC430 machines, with Windows 2003. We used the same image for each server, so they should be identical. On some servers it all works fine, and on others the Configuration Service keeps shutting down. On the machines we have this issue with, we have tried uninstalling/reinstalling, as well as repairing the installation. We have not been able to fix any of the servers that experience this issue, except one. And on that one, we uninstalled GSS2, deleted all leftover files and folders, and installed GSS1.1.
Has anyone isolated the cause of this issue?

Thanks, Krish.
I just installed it this morning. I'll run it for a week or so and post back here with the results.
Have a great weekend!

If this is still happening for you after the update, to diagnose it I'll need a memory snapshot of the process at the time it fails. Normally a snapshot gets written by my code to a file called NGERROR.DMP in the install directory, and if this is happening I'd appreciate it if you could send the dumpfile to me at nigel dot bree at gmail dot com (the files are large but they compress really well, so zip them up).
If the NGERROR.DMP file is isn't being produced you can get one by using the Microsoft User Mode Process Dump utility, which installs a control-panel applet called "Process Dumper"; this applet lets you configure a process name to monitor for faults and force the production of a dumpfile.
Since the end failure is actually in Microsoft's code, the reason I need the dumpfile is to inspect the things that lead up to the fault in NTDLL, and if I have the file I can load it into Visual Studio and get it to trace back exactly what my code was trying to do.
Also, is this a 32-bit or a 64-bit edition of Server 2003 that you are running on?
Thanks, Nigel.
This is a 32 bit system. I expect to be running a few of the servers pretty hard this week, so if there are any issues I'm sure we'll see them.

Faulting application ngserver.exe, version 11.5.0.2113 ntdll.dll
Cannot get Ghost Console 2.5 service to start on a Windows 2008 Server 64-bit machine.
Ghost Server and Ghost Explorer appear to work fine.
Ghost Console gives the error
Faulting application ngserver.exe, version 11.5.0.2113, time stamp 0x480dabac, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e03824, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00038e7c, process id 0x1654, application start time 0x01cab171e71230d1.
Will this run on 64-bit platform ?
