  • 1.  Configuring Concurrent Software Licenses

    Dear All,

Does anyone know how to configure concurrent software licenses? I have done LOADS of Per Node licenses and I have done Per Processor, but I have got a whole load of licenses that are calculated on a concurrent basis.

How does one do this in SMP 7.0/7.1 without the Silverlight Console?

Don't get me wrong - I have done a load of research upon this subject - I have read the Asset Managment Users Guides (both 6.x and 7.x) and neither says anything about it and actually, there is a paucity of information around Licenses in the official documentation, but can anyone push me towards ANY documentation?

    Kindest regards,

Well...I'll admit I'm still a 7.x newbie...but I have some ideas on how you could accomplish this (at least what I would attempt in NS 6.0).

    • Meter Start/Stop Events for the specific apps
    • Create a collection/filter (which would possibly be rather complex) but would look for the top "X" (where X is the number of concurent licenses you have) instances where the software shows a Start event but no corresponding Stop event: this is the list of "allowed" computers, ostensibly the first X ones which have run the app for the day.
    • Create a second collection (or target??) which excludes the first one.
    • Create an App Metering Denial policy that applies to this 2nd collection.
    • Use ASDK or CollectionUpdate.exe or some other mechanism to frequently update the 2nd collection
    • Set the computers with the specialized software installed to have a more frequent configuration request cycle than others

I *THINK* that would work...the nasty part would be figuring out the TOP X collection logic.  It would probably take a good bit of tuning to make it reasonably accurate, and dependent on user behavior (if the users frequently hibernate/suspend their laptops, then there would be no "stop" event, even though the software wasn't in use.

    Kyle,

Thanks for the idea, but that was not what I was looking for. I just want to be able to set up a Licence with "Per Concurrent User" and to be able to meter the use of the application so that the Software License Compliancy Report would show the Licence and how compliant we would be as an organisation.

I was not looking to stop people from using the software, I just need the reporting, so that the organisation could show how many concurrent users wehave of he application.

I am guessing that I need to se up an App Metering Policy for the application, but how do I get this to feed into the License sage part of the calculation?

    Kindest regards,

To create concurrent use licenses outside of the Silverlight UI, go to Manage->Assets and find the Software Licenses view.  There, you can create a new software license and make it concurrent.  However, the functionality pretty much stops there as there are currently no mechanisms in place to meter concurrent usage - basically all you get is a total license count.

    Andrew,

Oh dear (I wanted to be stronger in my expletive but I couldn't be).

So... you are saying that selecting "Concurrent" in th UI just switches off the calculation and it means nothing? It cannot be as mad as that, can it?

    Kindest regards,

    Andrew,

So... what abot selecting "Concurrent" in the Silverlight Console? Is that the same? It seems to look better, but this is deceptive at the best?!

Yes, selecting per concurrent use in the Silverlight UI just sets the license type - the resulting behavior is the same.
