Connection to Agent Server hang's on Reading License Information...

Hi All,

I have a client who had Ver 7 on their servers but we decided it was time to get them up to 8.5.3.
So we removed Version 7 from all their servers. Rebooted. Installed 8.5.3 on the "console" server and tried pushing out the agent to the other servers.
Now we're stuck!! The agent deploys successfully to the other servers, however after the reboot, when we attempt to connect from the console server, it sits their with a status of "Reading License Information" and never responds. There is nothing in Event Viewer on either the console or the agent server.

Strange thing is that we performed DR testing of their servers a while back when they had version 7 so I basically followed the same procedure as above with their recovered servers and they work perfectly! Now in fairness the recovered servers are on an enclosed LAN in a Recovery Centre so obviously we cannot replicate the setup verbatim!
This tell's me that there is something on their LAN causing the problem perhaps? I have seen the document on what ports to open for BESR but the people on the ground tell me these ports are open and they're should be no reason to mess around with these settings?

Has anyone seen anything like this? It's extremely frustrating and worrying. I will need to push them back to Ver 7 if I don't get this resolved ASAP!

Thanks in advance,
Gilly

It might be related to this issue with ThreatCon: http://support.veritas.com/docs/317350.

Does the console load ok at the 'client end'? If not, I would recommend updating to 8.5.5 and the using the workaround documented in the above TechNote.

It does

It loads fine on the console server chris.
I will try what the technote suggests and revert back.

Thanks as always,
Gilly

Hmm

Hi Chris,

Would I need to remove 8.5.3 and reboot prior to installing 8.5.5 on the console?

Is there anything else it could be before I carry out the recommended workaround?

Cheers,

Gilly

Gilly -- Try the part

Gilly -- Try the part mentioned in the technote about changing the logon account for the BESR services.  Regardless of BESR version, the Local System account does not have network privledges.  Do this at both the client and the server managing this client.

Gilly,

No need to remove 8.5.3 - you can update directly to 8.5.5.

One other thing you could try....to prove if this really is an issue with the license, you can run through the workound mentioned here which puts BESR into eval mode:

http://support.veritas.com/docs/313928

If it then works, it would suggest a problem with the license.

When I asked the following: Does the console load ok at the 'client end'? - I meant does the BESR console load on the agent machine (local access)? If this server does not have access to the internet - I think this issue is related to the ThreatCon article that I mentioned earlier.

Hope that helps.

Hi Chris,

I have updated the console to 8.5.5.
Do I need to just push the agent out again from the console or should I remove the Software from the agent server and push it?

Cheers,
Gilly

Gilly,

Hi Chris,

I removed version 8.5.3 of the agent from two servers, rebooted them and then pushed out from the console server again (which is running 8.5.5).
But I check the two agent servers and they are running 8.5.3

What is the best way to deploy the agent? Am i missing something?

Cheers,
Gilly

Hmm, that seems odd.

Have you tried running LiveUpdate to get them to update to 8.5.5?

Otherwise you may need to do a manual install on those servers....

Hi Chris,

I ran the live update on the console server to get it to 8.5.5.
I don't think Live Update would be installed on the target servers.

When you mention a manual install do you mean the console (ie install .NET Framework v2) or is there a way to manually install the agent only?

Thanks,
Gilly

I presume (not had time to test) that the agents folder does not get updated when you run LiveUpdate which is why you still see 8.5.3 on your target servers. To workaround this you'll need to either install 8.5.5 from scratch on your console server or manually install the 8.5.5 patch on your targets (this is probably the easier option). Let me know what route you decide. I can make the 8.5.5 patch available for you to download which can just be installed over the top of 8.5.3.

Re:

Thanks Chris,

I'll go with the patch if that's ok.
Can you post download details please?

Thanks again

Re:

Hi Lads,

I was just thinking last night...The machines that I tried it on that were in a seperate recovery centre had NO internet access and they were fine!
I tried changing the Logon Account for the BESR service but no joy.

I will concentrate on the License and putting the program into eval mode.

With regard to the console loading on the Agent server, I will check but I don't think .NET Framework v2 is on it and it may be an issue installing this.

Will get back to ye.

Thanks for your help!

Reinstall License

I was going to suggest a similar technote to the last one Chris posted. Here it is anyway:

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/318344.htm

The thing I like about Chris" suggestion is that it adds another diagnostic tool to the arsenal for troubleshooting license key issues.  There have been several posts where folks have had to apply a different license key in order to get all the features to work
