  • 1.  Convert Package Servers into Site Servers

    Hello,

what would be the best upgrade path to upgrade our 87 Package Servers to Altiris 7.

What I did so far in lab:

I exported all packages from my NS6 to the NS7 this way it creates Legacy Packages with same GUIDs.
I push the NS7 Agent to the Package Server. The agent is upgraded and packages are marked as not ready.
I assign Site Server role with Package Service to the server.
Patch and other unwanted packages are deleted from the new Site Server. Legacy Packages are kept and won't be transfered over network.
Patch Packages (PM7) are downloaded to the Site Server.

    It seems to be working.

Is there a better way to do it?
Is there a doc that I did not find about it?

    RJ

Sounds like you have it covered already, I am going through this process as well for 40 package servers.  What I did, so far, was use the Migration Wizard to import our settings into CMS 7, push the Altiris 7 agent install on to the package server (specifying the D drive, where the old agent resides), then it automatically upgrades the package service agent and synchronises packages.

There is some mention of this in the “Package & Task Server Migration Procedure” in the Altiris 7 Planning & Implementation Guide.

Doesn't this cause a problem when you try and upgrade NS6 Agents without uninstalling the sub agents first:

Although I guess you're not using Carbon Copy on Package Servers.

OK thanks for this. I just made sure I enabled all the individual agent uninstall policies (Patch, App meter, SWD etc but not Package Server), applied to a special collection for "package servers to be migrated"

If you use the aexagentutil /uninstallagents recommended normally for upgrading v6 agents it deletes all the packages.

Then do a push install of the NS7 agent and the NS7 agent installs with the "Package Server" tab, all the packages, but still showing the v6 Package Server agent. This should be upgraded by the [Settings > Notification Server > Site Server Settings > Package Service > Advanced > Windows] "Legacy Windows Package Server Agent Upgrade" Policy.
