Convert WIM images to IMG ?

Created: 19 Apr 2010 • Updated: 27 Oct 2010 | 3 comments

Hi,
We have already created a set of images via imagex as WIM files.
We are deploying them with WinPE to boot. But we would like to try Linux as it seems a much quicker.
I understand with Linux boot we can only deploy IMG files
So the question, is there a tool to convert WIM files to IMG files ?
I beleive not, but I cannot find the answer in the doc.
If someone as a pointer or an article, please.

Tks

short answer NO.  there is not such tool.  Deploy a wim image and create a base image using rdeploy.  Rdeploy images are better IMHO because it uses multicast.

I don't know what version you are using but when we upgraded from 6.8 to 6.9 SP3, WinPE was upgraded from 1.6 to 2.1 and that made a big difference in speed (at least for us).  The only reason that I mention this is that if you have WIM images, you might want to think about sticking with them because then you can take advantage of  Microsoft's tools like DISM which is made specifically for WIM images.  Adding drivers to a WIM image is a breeze once you get familiar with DISM.  In reality, you have to do what's best for your environment but I wanted to mention our experience with WinPE when we upgraded.

If you're going with Windows 7, WIM images are great.  OK so you have to use WinPE to deploy them, but its export capabilities and availability of manipulation tools has won over many of my customers.

The image combining capability is great.  Combining multiple (in one example, 6) x7 GB images gave me a total image size of 8.5GB.  Single instance storage - gotta love it.
