copying from a remote server to a remote storage

Created: 26 Mar 2014 | 8 comments

Hello All;

Nowadays I must implement BackupExec to several company locations. The plan includes several disk backup unities and many servers.

I have a backup consideration but not sure it's possible to implement or not. So wanted to consult you... Here it is:

Master Management Server has to be at location A. Master management Server has a backup a storage.

There are Windows file servers at locations B and C and these Windows servers must be backed up. C location has a very big backup storage.

As I like minimal installations, I don't want to install Media Servers to each location.

Is it possible to backup file server data in location B to the storage in location C just using agent(s) to location B without install media server neither location B or D ? All location can access to each others directly. If it is possible to backup by the way, how does the data flow? I mean, does the data flow through location A or the data is copied to location C directly?

(I am not talking about bandwidth, network, deduplication, synthesizing etc. stuff, I consider them but they are different matters.)

Sincerly

Hi,

You've obviously got VERY fast WAN connections in order to do backups across the WAN. For everything else, you'd need to consider something like optimized dedupe with BE. You'd backup to a dedupe folder on the local site, and you'd need a media server per site for this, before duplicating the data to the centralised site using optimised dedupe...for this you'd need CASO. Check below for more information:

Sorry for the long URL.

Thanks!

During backup data will always flow from the remote server to the media sever then to the storage

Craig&pkh ;

Thanks for your replies.

I 'm evaulating what I can accomplish without media server(s).

High WAN bandwith necessity is ok, I'm aware of this. If the answer is that "yes you can", my second question will be "can an agent accomplish to dedupe data at the source before attemting to transfer it through WAN, I mean "without media server"...

pkh's picture

Yes. Client-side dedup is possible. Not that it is not justn WAN speed. Link quality is very important, any dropped packets and your job will fail

Tirelibirefe's picture

Just want to be sure; "can an agent handled client-side dedup without media server itself"?

Hello All;

I have a very big trouble with ndmp connections of my Backupexec 2012 SP4. Herer it is;

I have a Backupexec which has a HP P2000 which is used for deduplication disk storage. The servers in the same subnet can be backed up by using client-side deduplication. There is no any problems in its own subnet.

I have been trying to backup a remote file server to the deduplication disk storage. The remote server can be backed up untill about 500 MB but when I attempt to backup larger data ( larger than 500MB), backupexec can not backp up. The error mesage is as below:

Final error: 0x1 - Incorrect function.
