  • 1.  Corrupt file when extracting, editing then re-adding to image

    Posted May 16, 2007 01:35 AM
I have a text file within a ghost image of an NTFS partition.  I extract the file and the file seems ok, if I then re-add the file to the image and then either view or extract it again the file is corrupt, it seems to contain parts of what it should but other bits are missing and parts that should be at the end of the file are at the start.
    Any ideas?

Hi, I'll see if I can reproduce your problem but I need a few more details please:
What OS is contained in your NTFS image?
Which version of Ghost Explorer are you editing the image with?
What happens when you try to restore this image?

Just to clarify the operations you performed, did you extract the file, edit it then import it back to the image, overwriting the original version in the image?

    Regards,
    Morgan

    Thanks for the reply.
The image contains XP service pack 2.
Ghost Explorer version is 11.0.1.1533 - should be the latest.
The image seems to restore ok, just the file is corrupt.

I edited the file both by removing it from the image, editing it and then re-adding it and also by extracting the file, editting it and then overwritting the one in the image.

I've also changed the build that I captured with Ghost to use FAT32 and I can edit the file in the image without problems, so the problem seems to be with NTFS.

    Thanks
    Phil

    Hi Phil,

I am having trouble reproducing any corruption by editing my XPSP2 images. Perhaps it is something more specific to your image or the file you are editing. A few more details might help if you can provide them:
-OS you are running GhostExp in,
-The full path and file name of the file you are editing ie. "c:\Program Files\test\edited_file.txt",
-The file size of the file you are editing,
-Version of Ghost which the image was created with.

Are other files able to be added successfully to the NTFS image?

    Regards,
    Morgan

    Hi Morgan,

    - I'm running GhostExp in XP SP2.
    - The file I'm attempting to edit is C:\Sysprep\sysprep.inf
    - The file is 38k in size
    - The version of ghost i'm using to capture is 11.0.1 under DOS using the ghost boot disks and burning the image onto a rewritable DVD.

    - I've done a bit more experimenting and found that if I create a text file greater than 32kb and insert it into the image - say into C:\ and then extract it it will be corrupt - could you please try this.

    Again thanks for your help.

    Phil

    Hi Phil,

Interesting, there does seem to be a bug here in Ghost Explorer, where added files appear to be corrupted when extracted from the image. I say "appear" because evidently once the image is restored the file is completely in tact  in the restored partition.

The issue itself seems to lie in Ghost Explorer's extraction of edited files in the image. We will have a closer look at the cause when we get a chance. I will update the post with any news on the matter.

Good news is, that the actual data in the image is not corrupted and Ghost will restore it properly. Could you also confirm that the file is as it should be after Ghost restores the image?

Thanks for you responses, they were a big help.
    Regards,
    Morgan

    Dear Morgan,

Any progress on this? I have the same problem as Phil.

I can confirm that an added file appears to be corrupt if you re-extract it from the image (e.g. to double-check). However, if you clone a PC with this image, the added file(s) appear to be fine.

It is not a showstopper, but it can cause confusion and more importantly, it is impossible to change a certain file in an image more than once, without keeping a copy outside the image.

    Kind regards,
    Vincent Timmermans
