This issue has been solved. See solution.

I'm trying to backup the database from our endpoint protection server, because we're going to rebuild the server.  After last time, I know I need to do more than just backing up and restore the db, but I can't seem to get the DB to even backup.

When I run the db backup tool, I get an error "Could not connect to database.  Cannot back up the site."

What might be wrong to keep the backup tool from talking to the db?

There's plenty of drive space.  I'm not sure how to check that 'ODBC is successful' though.

Hi Gai-Jin

Here is the details on how to work with ODBC.

On the management server, click Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools.

In the Administrative Tools dialog box, double-click Data Sources (ODBC).
In the ODBC Data Source Administrator dialog box, click System DSN.
On the System DSN tab, double-click SymantecEndpointSecurityDSN.
On the ODBC tab, verify that the Data source name text box is SymantecEndpointSecurityDSN and type an optional description.
Select the Login tab.
in the User ID text box, type dba.
In the Password text box, type the password for the database. This password is the one that you entered for the database when you installed the
management server.
Select the Database tab.
If you are using Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager 11 MR4 MP2 (11.0.4202) or lower, in the Server name text box, type the servername.
If you are using Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager 11 RU5 (11.0.5002) or greater, in the Server name text box, type SPC_servername.
In the Database name text box type the default, sem5.
On the ODBC tab, click Test Connection and verify that it succeeds.
Click OK.
Click OK.
