This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi all,

I would need to help with some problem. We have old physical server, which is not reliable anymore and we want it to convert to virtual environment. I will find the way how (I have done it many times), but, I am not sure, if my Symantec BackupExec 2010 would work in virtual machine as well ? because, we have very big problem with installing Symantec BackupExec 2010 R3 Media Server in virtual machine. After backup job, which failed with some error with virtual drivers, both virtual servers, which was backing up had damaged network cards (I will post this problem in new topic). Actually, I really would like to be able to have old server with all features in virtual environment also with BackupExec and I will change all my jobs to the file backup to network location.

also, second part is about converting. I have been performing it by VMware Converter few times, but actually, I had better experience with doing it by Symantec System Recovery 2011, which we have already bought for our server. What do you think? I would really like to do coversion as soon as possible.

thanks for all help

all the best to the new year 2013

Does the old server run BE 2010 R3? If so, and it doesn't convert, leave it and fo the following:

1. Create a new VM with the same OS and patch it accordingly. Install BE 2010 R3 and SP2 and patch accordingly.

2. Grab copies of the Data/Catalogs folders, and follow the TN below to move these to the new server:

Turn off the old server before doing #2 if you want to keep the same server name.

Hallo, sorry, I forget to add important information, that that server is main DC (all FSMO roles are on it) and becuase of problem with replication, I can not move these roles to another DCs, becuase of replication not wokring (SYSVOL and NETLOGON are not shared). These new servers are Windows Server 2008 R2 and old one physical is Windows Server 2003 R2.

So only the way si convert it to virtual "as is", but I am afraid, that its not possible to do it with domain controller :(

...being a DC isn't part of what I mentioned above. That relates only to BE and it works.

Once BE is moved, you can follow Microsoft best practice to get your AD roles moved across to a new VM if you so require...that forms part of a MS forum discussion.

Do clearly specify what OS is the old server using and what roles it is performing.  Your various information is quite confusing.

There is a couple of things to note.  Symantec does not recommend the use of a VM for a media server because you would have problems accessing real devices.  The media server should be a physical machine.

You mentioned that your DC has AD problems.  These problems should be fixed as soon as possible and before any movement.  Otherwise, you might end up with a non-functioning AD.
