CPS database backup-Do I need to?
Updated: 25 May 2010 | 3 comments
I backup my continous protection server "protected resources" each night from the disk to tape for archiving. I have had no problems restoring them during test, but if I loose the backup server and need to reload CPS server without a cps database backup will I still be able to restore the backed up files to the network servers? I have not found a clear answer as to what is in these databases, I assume it is the configuration for CPS such as backup routines and the servers involved in CPS.
Thanks

CPS Database Backup and Recovery
Hello BigQ -
The CPS database more of a configuration database; that is, it stores information about machines, pairs, bandwidth throttles, job data, alert history, etc. It doesn't have any knowledge of the actual files protected so it's different from a classic backup catalog.
In a disaster situation, your recovery/reconfiguration time will be significantly shorter if you have backed up the database, as you won't have to set up all the pairs and jobs again. So, we do recommend backing up the CPS databases on a regular basis, but you probably don't need to back it up every day unless you constantly tweak or reconfigure your CPS environment.
The short answer to your question is that the files you have protected via CPS and backed up via Backup Exec will be restorable without a CPS database backup.
