This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi,

We recently purchased Symantec Ghost Suite Solution 11.5.1.2266. I need to take image of one of our servers which is HP Z400(quad core)system with Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard(64 bit), 12 GB RAM, 1 terrabyte hard disk(used space is 58GB) with single partition, one Ethernet card (Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit) and some applications installed.

To take image I proceeded as below-

1. Installed Ghost console(server) on my laptop which has Windows 7 Professional(32 bit), 4 GB RAM and using Intel(R) 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection for Ethernet.

2. Installed ghost client console on the server.

3. Created an image definition and then created a task to create image of the server.

When I execute the task, it fails after a while stating "To virtual partition failed". When I searched the forum for solution, there is a mention of creation of boot partitio which I do not fully understand.

Please let me know what I am missing to resolve the above problem.

In your problem description,

In your problem description, you have not mentioned adding the correct Vista 32 bit drivers to WinPE via Ghost Boot Wizard, so that WinPE can mount the NIC and hard disk chipsets on your server when it boots to the "virtual partition". WinPE creates a virtual drive on X: (by default) from which it runs - it runs entirely from memory.

Ghost Solution Suite uses WinPE version 2 which is based on the Vista kernel, which is why Vista 32 bit drivers are required. The error you are experiencing is typical of a failure to mount the NIC controller on the target system.  In addition, although WinPE has basic SATA support built in, the standard server rig tends to have RAID controllers which required you to add the necessary drivers so that WinPE can access the hard disk array as well. After all, there is no point in having the NIC mounted if the hard disk cannot be accessed!

The problem you may face is that server manufacturers seldom provide Vista drivers for their machines as Vista was never a server operating system, so you are left with the problem of testing other drivers to see which ones might work (eg W2K3).  However, isn't the Z400 a high end workstation? If so, you may be lucky.

What exactly are the details under the failed task

Open the task that has failed and open the To Virtual Partition step that has failed.

You will be able to understand if the failure is pointing the network card and/or the storage.

Add Vista 32/W2K3 drivers for the network card to the Boot Wizard.

The need to add Vista32 /W2K3 drivers are explained by EdT in the previous comment.

Follow the below mentioned article to add drivers to Boot Wizard

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH110136

However I would say the best method to create image of a server machine will always be Boot Disc and Ghostcast server.

Here is the article to use boot disc and Ghostcast server.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH110729

Try this and update the status.

Thanks so much for your

Thanks so much for your reply. I am able to create image of the server now .Included Vista driver in the WinPE_512 version and used that for boot image.

However I have a doubt about the "Source Drive","Source Partition" and "Partition Operation".

My server's hard disk total capacity is 1 terabyte and it has has 3 partitions(C,E and F). When I created the image, I selected "Source Drive" as "1" and "Partition operation"  was not selected. An image was created but I am not sure if the image is of the complete disk or only of C drive. If it is only of C drive, What should I select to have image of the complete hard disk(all three partitions). Please let me know.

Thanks again for your prompt replies.

Regards,

Shalini

Ghost allows you to either

Ghost allows you to either image a single partition, or image an entire hard disk. You could also check the content of your Ghost image using Ghost Explorer to see what is in it as a sanity check.

The size of the Ghost image might also give you an idea of what is inside.

Thanks much. I understand the source and partition operations now. I am able to take the image successfully.

Once again thanks for all the support.

Leave the source drive field blank

Do not specify the source drive as 1. Leave the source drive field blank and try imaging. It should work. Reply in case of any issues.

Hi Shalini

Please visit the links mentioned below to download network and storage drivers to add under WINPE.After downloading the drivers ,run the .exe file to extract the drivers to a folder.

Follow the article mentioned below to add the drivers to WINPE .

Note : Create a copy of WINPE template and add the drivers to the copy template.

TITLE : How to add drivers to DeployAnywhere or WinPE.
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH110136

After adding drivers to WINPE , go to client machine's properties on the Console and choose the Winpe copy template under Client Tab.

Run the task and this should hopefully resolve the issue.
